These following three Byzantine coins I thought that if I could get them cheap enough I'd go for them, and it ended up that way  . All of the photos are of the seller's. Always been interested in the history and coinage of the early Byzantine Empire, and this interest only grew as I made post-Roman Germanic one of my collecting focuses, since the Byzantine Empire was contemporary with the barbarian nations of the west. First up is my first ever half-follis (20 nummi) of Justinian I. Justinian I (ruled 527-565 AD) Obv: DN IVSTINI-ANVS PP AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right Rev: Large K, long cross to left, star above and below, officina letter (B) to right, Constantinople mint SB 164  |

I know Byzantines aren't the hottest coins to collect but man, I could almost hear the crickets chirping in my three threads.

These are very hard to find in EF. VG is common, but even F to VF is hard to get. I think you did alright with these. Nice coins. I got a thing now for these Byzantine coins. Yea, sometimes I post stuff, and get barely any response because, a the coin is obscure, or there is noone collecting them, or those that see them know less than I do about them, and eagerly await more information.
How is this coin dated? I see you gave a blanket date for the reign of Justinian. Is there a way of narrowing down the date. Early issues, Late issues, style, size? Help a brother out.

Without regnal year on the coin, it's really tough to exactly date these coins, but my particular coin I would guess it's from early reign, before they utilized the forward facing bust on the larger denominations. |
