My 1st purchase for 2019 from Heritage NYINC auctions. These are Heritage photos which are a bit juiced. The token is actually medium chocolate brown. NGC PR65BN - Doug Robins collection.

Quote: Wade: the 57 1P isn't mine (under bidder)
the 57 1/2 is mine @Wade:Sorry to answer almost 3 weeks later regarding your last comment. So, I don't know if you were aware of your 1/2 Penny 1857 (Courteau #170) was previously certified by NGC «MS-65 BN» (#2793027-027). Doug Robins probably acquired it during the previous sale I listed for this token in January 2015. Source: https://www.NGCcoin.com/certlookup/2793027-027/65/

Quote: IndianGoldEagle: MS or Proof, it is a gorgeous piece. It's not a « Proof» token. However, the obverse of Courteau #170 (but also the reverse to a lesser extent) have the particularity of having a "granular surface", which may come from corroded dies. But it remains to be confirmed, because I have some doubts. This variety is not very frequent, with according to my estimates to date 1.3% of the 1/2 Penny 1857 being from this one. Note: Sorry for my english...

Ainsv, I was not aware of it's previous grading, and now wondering why some one would crack a 65

Quote: Wade: I was not aware of it's previous grading, and now wondering why some one would crack a 65 @Wade:Especially since, in my opinion, this token does not deserve this grade (At least via the photos). But it may be different with the token in hand. Moreover, I had not understood in January 2015 why this token reached such a high bid price, this even if the variety Courteau #170 is not frequent.

Yarm, that is a broad struck beauty !
Ains, what was the sale price of this token in 2015? curious as it came raw in a lot that included a brockage and the '54 1/2 crosslette 4

$650 CDN...
never would've guessed even close to that, variety or not (as Doug would say, the only thing rarer than this variety is a collector who care about this variety)
just to clarify, you don't thin it deserved the 65 grade, did you feel it warranted higher? or lower? the only reason I can see cracking a 65 is if someone was hoping to re-submit and hope for a higher grade. but I don't see this being the case.

But given the gradation made by NGC, I tell myself that the friction marks I see in the photos may not be with the token in hand. Or NGC is completely in the field But without having seen the token in person, I will avoid tilting either way. The only thing I can say is that it can sometimes be misleading to evaluate a coin with very little wear and tear. Indeed, because it is tempting to think that the coin is uncirculated when there are very few contact marks. And sometimes the coin can even be more visually appealing than several typical uncirculated coins. In the end, I hope that my English will be understandable enough to express my real thoughts. Given that I am not comfortable writing English, I try to limit myself to the "essentials". Otherwise, several dozen tokens from Doug Robins' collection that were offered at the auction in 2018 had been cracked, and some had been re-evaluated by NGC, while others had not. I had already mentioned this example in another topic on the forum (Pay particular attention to selling prices ): Before: https://coins.ha.com/itm/canada/can...3014-26380.sAfter: https://coins.ha.com/itm/canada/can...3064-29518.s
