Florida, how do you get a dateless 1918? If it's dateless how do you know it's a 1918?
Can you tell by the reverse?

Found myself in line at the customer service desk at Safeway and a five dollar bill in my pocket (wife must have slipped up), bought 2 rolls each nickels and pennies. Yield one VF 1936 buffalo. (haven't opened the pennies yet).

so I had saved up 11 dateless buffalos and talked to some people on the classic us coin forum and came to the conclusion that I would soak some of them in vinegar to see some dates
4 are done and 4 more are in the vinegar thinking I'm gonna leave 3 uncleaned
so far

cool considering my oldest one with a date I have found is a 1918D

I just went through a box of nickels. Found 27 pre 1960's. An even mix of 40's & 50's and a 1939

In the box of nickels I just searched, I also found a Canadian 1867-1992 commemorative and a shiny Mexican peso (2008). My girlfriend will love that because she grew up in Mexico.

It's really neat what can be found in just rolls of nickels yet! I can't wait to go through the next $20 I just got yesterday.

You got that right. In my experience searching rolls and boxes, nickels yield the greatest percentage of older coins. Finding at least a dozen pre 1960 jeffersons in a box is a given. It doesn't require as much patience as searching higher denominations for silver. |

I truly think that nickels are very under looked at. We are finding older than 1960 (now 50 yr and older!) coins in all rolls. I recall looking through any coins in the early 60s and not finding much older than the 1930s! Either nickels are very under looked or many are just putting them rolled in the bank. With all the 'counters' in grocery stores and banks, I think many coins are not looked at even by tellers since they are machine wrapped and not recounted for the most part. I was just going to check through a group of $10 that were hand wrapped for checking for the correct amt. not for the hopes of finding anything. Well the 3rd coin was a 1945 P! in the group a buffalo and many before 1960! It provoked my husband to get more and in the $20 of machine rolled at least 50 or so (I didn't look through them yet) of prior 1960 includin 1938 and 1939! He only was looking for silver since I found 1! I told him don't expect to find one Look at is as a surprise! He was disappointed! I was not I am getting some nickels collection books to maybe fill up, but I think they would be more filled than almost any other coin!

nickels are sort of overlooked, but I think a lot of it is that it is tough to find stuff that you can flip easily for a profit. even the War Nickels are only worth around $2 melt right now and almost all of the circulated jeffersons are worth less than $1 each and very plentiful. The good part is, there isn't a ton of people looking at them for the silver content, like you have with half dollars. right now I have abt $20 in pre-55 jeffersons thaT ARE SITTING AROUND doing nothing, and it is very unlikely they will become valuable in the future - they are just too common. I'm considering just spending most of them for the sake of lightening up my accumulation. Edited by mdh157

So I got my first box of nickels today and I need help for what I should save. So far I am saving anything pre 1960, and also 2009's. also should I save the 1982 p nickels, they look like they have a good price on numismedia. anyways, first box yielded plenty of 40's and 50's nickels. I got 2 buffalos and a War Nickel. and 9 2009 d nickels. average box? |

9 2009 D nickels? I have found 1 out of 4 boxes. 2 buffs and 1 war is a good box, I think at least. as far as key dates, the 1950-D and I think the 1939-D, and the 1938-S or D. Not HUGE premiums, but those are keepers for sure. I pull out all the 40s and 50s and check them for errors/ varieties, but if I already have a better-conditioned example in my folder, I'll pitch it out.

I got $80 of NF String wrapped today, in which I ended my 4 box long silver drought with a 1942P.  Also found my first 1958-plain, they're not too easy to find. |

so here is what I kept. since it was my first box I do need every year so I did have lots of keepers. 1936 buffalo 1937 buffalo 1940 (x2) 1941 (x2) 1941 s 1942 1944 s War Nickel1946 1947 d 1947 s 1948 1948 s 1949 1952 1955 d 1956 d 1957 d 1958 d 1959 d 1960 1960 d 1961 1961 d 1962 d 1963 1963 d 1964 1964 d 2009 d (x9) 1998 canada 1982 p (x4) are these worthless? so that was the results of my first box. next few boxes will have a lot less keepers because I will have some spaces finally filled out. i am trying to complete a circulated set. should I folder them or album them? |

Nice score there murrellington - anytime you can get a war and 2 buffs in one box you are onto something good!
I did a box this weekend and got the usual 20 pre-1960s. Nothing special to report.
