I finished my 14th box of nickels today and found 20 pre-1960s which is slightly fewer than usual. However, I found an impressive 5 silver nickels! ...Plus a Canadian five-cent piece and one ugly Buffalo. Here are pictures of the silvers and the buffalo.   |

My silver/buffalo dry streak continues after yesterday's NF String box.
Had a 1942 that I at first thought looked like a silver, but upon examining the other side it was yet another 1942D. (5th one in 10 boxes. Geez) Still looking for my first silver '42.

Coppernickeldaddy,
what do you plan on doing with all the nickels that you have gathered from this? I know I could sure use some of the pre-60's nickels to fill my album. I have had no luck with finding 1938-s, 1939-D, 1939-S, 1940-S, 1942-D, 1949-S, 1950-D (big surprise there!), and the 1955. Do you plan on auction? keeping? undecided?
I have a ton of pre-60's nickels that I even thought about trading for the ones I need. Not that you would need any! I've really enjoyed following this thread, keep up the good work!

$60.00 in rolls today, $30.00 bank wrapped and $30.00 CWR = Zero.
Nothing found- all reg nickels.

I actually just started picking up some rolls of nickels from the bank a week ago. In the first roll there was a 1945 P! I couldn't believe it. I did look through $10 and there were quite a few earlier than 1960 (1.10) and a buffalo (no date though) THat find made my husband go and pick up another $20. No more silver just quite a few early dates 1939 earliest and different bank. I will be going through the rest soon just a pain to unwrap and I do need wrappers to rewrap since they are the plastic wrappers for the most part.

I've been following this thread since I joined. Tomorrow I pick up my first box of nickels. can't wait to see what I find.

Just wondering if all are keeping the nickels once they are looked through or returning and replacing. I haven't read through all the pages but wondered. We have gotten about 100 in nickels but I haven't been able to go through all yet. I have decided to keep the nickels due to the value of the metal itself.

I keep everything silver, foreign, Buffaloes, and mintages less than 25 million. Everything else gets recorded and released.

I was asking if you keep the all the actual nickels. I have decided to keep nickels kind of like an investment in the nickel similar to pre 1965 coins. They may or not be worth in future years but about a few months ago I decided to just keep all change and now I have gotten some nickels and going through them found some old/silver/buffalo nickels in the mix and I've only checked $10 worth. I think it is a good way to hedge inflation at basically no cost. What I find in the rolls, to me at least, is a bonus. I recently have read quite a few articles on saving them as well. Some hedge fund manager got 20 million of them-not sure he intention but it was for investment. I realize they cannot be melted, but they could and will (if the economy stays like it is) become similar to the pre 1965 silver coins. Just my thoughts

Hello, I am new to this forum and searching rolled coins. I picked up my first 2 boxes of nickels from the bank yesterday and noticed they all were rolled in plastic shrink. Is this common now or do some of you still get paper rolled coins from the bank? The bank informed me they ordered the boxes of nickels from Brinks. Any information would be appreaciated. Thank you.

Tecate - it all depends on who your bank receives their rolls from. Brinks in my experience has always come plastic shrink wrapped. The other bank I deal with I believe uses Garda and they have the machine wrapped paper rolls. Both suppliers turn up fairly similar results though. Hope that helps you some!

THis past week, from 4 different places, I have received hand wrapped (that I checked and found the silver and buffalo and quite a few before 1970), plastic wrappers and paper machine wrapped. I guess it depends on the machine rolling them what type of wrapper. I have to get some wrappers so I can look through the other rolls that are machine wrapped since you kind of destroy them opening! What difference is the wrapper? Just wondering why you ask.

I tend to find more Buffalo nickels from the plastic Brinks wrappers. I think they take out anything magnetic though. Pre 1982 Canadians and any other foreign magnetic coins only show up in paper rolls for me. I find War Nickels evenly from both. |

Cravenfan07 - Thanks for the response. I guess the main reason I was asking is to find out if some "good stuff" could be found from plastic shrink and you answered that. Thank you.
I look forward to tackling the two boxes of nickels tomorrow night.
