Well after nearing the end of 2 boxes of nickels, I thought I was going to get skunked for silver. However...this beauty of a coin was found in my 3rd to last roll. Do you guys think this is a proof War Nickel? Did they even make them during the war? This is, IMO, at least AU50.     ! Thoughts? In case its hard to see, its definitely full steps and its very sharply struck. Unfortunately there are some scatches and blemishes from being in circulation. I cant tell if it has been cleaned though.   |

Best War Nickel I have seen from circulation! I'd say at least AU 50, but we'd need better photos to grade. photos should be more straight on and maybe a little larger. |

I just found a 1938D with a lot of steps. It looks like AU or close to it.
I also found a 1958 proof that looks beautiful, probably au-55.
Not a bad box.

The proof you found would be graded PRF-55 then.
But that is a great find none-the-less!

Jizer1, there were no proof coins made in San Francisco until 1968, so it is definitely not a proof, but a very beautiful coin. You are very lucky to have found it. I wish I was half as lucky.  |

I found my very first 1950 nickel today but it was not a Denver mintmark, but that's okay with me; I also found a 1955p in that same bunch! |

So yesterday I went to my local BoA they didn't have a box to spare, so they gave me $100 in trays, half of which were customer-wrapped rolls. Not only did I fill 6 holes in my '38-'61 album and upgrade another 4, I also found:
1x1945-P War Silver
3x? Buffalo Heads
1x1933 Buffalo Head in XF+ condition.
1x1900 V-Nickel!
Best nickel haul *ever* so far!

Yep Steve,contrary to popular belief,customer wrapped rolls often have good stuff. All of my Liberty nickels(5 total),and over half of my silver wars(110 total)and most of my dated buffalos(23 total)came from CWRs. Boxes are nice,but if you can get quantity of CWRs,go for it!

@hockingzig Aye most of my best finds come from customer wrapped rolls or teller trays (including nearly all of my recent silver finds); however, I've been pretty consistently getting at least one War Nickel per machine-wrapped box. I've never come across a buffalo head nickel in a box yet, let alone four at a time. :-) @sich0015 I'm currently trying to use some lighting tricks to divine the dates on the dateless ones. Hopefully it will bear fruit. |
