The 3rd roll I opened today had a 1940 and 1949 in it. I always seem to find dates on either side of Wartime. I am yet to find any silver nickels, but will keep searching :)

I did a box this week and it was a funny one. It gave up no pre 60 in the first 10 rolls. Then, I found a 1947d, which is a hole filler for me :-) after about a dozen boxes I finally found one. Funny thing, I found 3! 2 in one roll.
Also 2 x 1955 and 2 x 1958.
no silvers or buffs.

I got a couple rolls today at the bank and ended up with some pre-1960's, but no silver. (1939, 1946D, 1947, 1949D, 2 1954D)

found single War Nickel, 54S upgrade and one other upgrade this morning in a bag of nickels - avg amount of pre-60. no semi-keys. ehh. |

Nice finds folks! Good to see others having success. I did a little coin hunting in some rolls with my son. Found several pre-60s Jeffersons, a couple of 2009s, and some foreign coins (same size/thickness). Several S mint nickels as well, 2 from 52. But this was the more interesting find.   |

Thanks DCM - I had to double take. Was it an '89...no wait '59...no wait '39? The eyes aren't what they used to be but with a little magnification, I was delighted it was the latter. I just goes to show - don't overlook the new looking, shiny coin. It just might be 75 years old!!

Rackster - good point. I have found several rare coins this way - couple of 50d nickels and some of the semi-key dates.

CoinCbass - it's really terrific when you get a semi-key or better coin during the hunt! And it's always a good feeling when a common nickel fills a hole or betters the coin you had there. One step closer!! The two 52 S nickels a couple weeks back were of that variety. Filled two holes and weren't 'filler' coins to boot.

agreed. I have had 2 complete sets of nickels from circulation for a while and I still find updates. just had one the other week - forget which, but it was an S mint. still get the thrill

Well I learned a lesson today =P Make sure your sorting space is clean before opening up a fresh box! I was halfway through a box of nickels today when I realized that a double-headed joke nickel I had found in my last box which I had placed on a stack of half dollars was missing. Had to go back and re-search the half box of nickels I had opened to find it =P So far I've got 1 1943 S War Nickel out of the box, but still a lot more to look through! (Although this particular box has felt very... sticky. And there seems to be a black goo on a lot of them. Dunno what's up with that.) |
