Hi. I just started searching coins so I can make a collection for my 9 year old son. I found this quarter that appears to show copper color. I looked online and saw what people call ' Dryer Coins' and this does not appear to be that. It looks exactly the same as a regular quarter and not wide rimmed or worn down. Any idea what I would call this? Is it a mint error? Value maybe?
Look like a 25-cent that spent a lot of time at the casino... "Casino Quarters" look exactly like this. The older pure nickel 25-cent coins from casinos tend to lose their reeding and get smooth on the edge.
These coins are steel planchets, multi-ply plated. First with a thin layer of nickel, then a thicker layer of copper and a final layer of nickel. The copper adds a bit of 'softness' to the coin, making them a little bit easier to strike.
