I like this thread! Reminds me of some Games magazine articles where they take close-ups of everyday items and have you try to ID it. I'll try to find something to add to the mix.

I think I found one of those in a roll of nickels once.
Another one that used to get me was when people spit their gum into the foil wrapper of their next piece, toss it on the floor, and it gets stepped on and flattened into a silver disc. Again, usually looks a lot like a quarter from a distance.

Interesting @andyg! It looks like a Japanese token that was later broached to create that square hole. Maybe for use in a door knob or lock mechanism? Am I close?

Close... the square hole is so that it can be used for turning something. clue - These often turn up in junk lots here in Europe (but not in Japan) I'll let you have the answer later.

Ah ok very interesting! That would mean that the ridges along the edge are like PMD "enhancements" as well as the roughness would permit easier turning. Any others out there that someone would like to share?
