Any thoughts on what might have caused the circular damaged area at the base of the "1"?

I did some googling to see whether it might be some sort of known die damage, but I couldn't find anything.

I'm interested in learning how it would grade, too, although I'm not holding out high hopes due to its condition

Looks like post strike damage to me.

Damage like this could be duplicated by using a C clamp that has lost the swivel head on the movable jaw. (My Dad had a couple of old C clamps that had lost the swivel head and they made marks like this on anything you tried to grip.)

The swivel head is shown in the picture below - marked by the arrow.

I'd also say post strike damage. Maybe someone tried to put a hole in that coin...
