Nice semi-PL obverse on this 1854 Gold $3 but I wonder about the apparent difference in surfaces between the obverse and reverse. If photos are accurate, obverse looks to be at least MS63 and semi-PL, with the reverse being of equal quality. The ear on Miss Liberty appears to have a die chip in these photos. What did NGC grade it, and did it straight-grade?

The photo differences are lighting. The reverse is washed out with more light. I have been experimenting taking photos. As we all know, there are a lot of these out there, I have been looking for one with an exceptional strike to it in AU58. Saw this at a local show and just thought, there it is. One of the best strikes I have seen in the grade I wanted.I prefer to purchase them at shows if I can find what I am looking for.

What a beautiful coin; excellent choice and congratulations!

She really does look like a choice uncirculated coin. If you got it for a typical AU-58 price you scored eye appeal close to an MS-64 piece, for maybe $4000 less than what such a coin would cost. Well done!
