These actually collected and apparently sell for decent money. Check ebay sold listings.

Quite entertaining to see! was this done back in the day as a form of retaliation against the reserves, or when were these turned into 'potty dollars' I would love to know the story behind them

I imagine someone saw a Trade dollar one day, and said "it looks like she's taking a dump". A jeweler friend said "I can make that happen!"... and the rest is history.

Potty dollars are to Trade dollars as hobo nickels are to Buffalo nickels.

I suspect that the devaluation of Trade dollars somewhat contributed to the variety of alternative uses and abuses to which these were subjected. Of course, other Liberty Seated coins were likewise altered to potty coins. Personally, I'm a fan of the Trade dollars that were made into box dollars.

This potty dollar is well done, and the price isn't terribly high. Note that it's got 4 watchers. I'll not be surprised to see it sell to someone with a flush wallet.
