When I was eight, my grandfather died. I had only met him once when I was five -- he lived in Seattle, we lived in DC. Truthfully, I remember that he smelled of urine in wool. He was in his 80s. I guess he was in his mid 40s when my father was born. I have a copy of his photo in uniform (WWI) and his diary -- he operated/helped operate a train supplying the front lines. The diary of his time in France is ... very repetitive. When he died (in the spring of 1968) I received a leather bag of Lincoln pennies, and this: I may or may not still have the pennies. But I never lost track of this nickel. How long did he have it? I never heard that story.

All these silver dollars were taken out of circulation by my parents, or other relatives. None of these were purchased at coin stores. The most recent one was found in circulation at the Louisville, KY airport in 1957 or 1958 (I was present when we got it in change -- it was a Morgan dollar, but I don't know which one). The others were taken out of circulation in California no later than 1956, and probably post WWII. One of the Peace dollars (don't know which) was the first collectable coin I got as a gift while living in California around 1955-1956. This predates my coin collecting, which didn't start until the fall of 1958, while I was living for a while in Manhattan. Added: Note the Scotch tape marks on the 6th coin. These are from when I had this coin as part of my earliest type collection in the fall of 1958. At that time, I had all my type coins taped to a piece of cardboard. This was before I had any albums or folders.

A coin from a bracelet my grandma's father gave her in 1936 after he fought (apparently briefly) in the Spanish Civil War. Here is the bracelet. It used to have more coins, but some were removed because it was too large for her wrist. She didn't like it and never actually wore it. I guess that's why I have it now. lol. 81 years in the family

Very nice, bd251. It's not a coin but, this is the best I can do while stretching it a bit. More than a year ago, I began my serious interest in coins. I always had an interest just waiting for the right time. That time came last year when I discovered my wife's grandfather's collection "leftovers" (after being picked for obvious silver/gold, etc.). These coins were in a shed and in desparate need of attention. I brought them inside to start and that's where that sat for months. One day, I decided to delve into them. I was quickly confronted with conservation techniques because of the storage conditions they had been through. That's when I joined CCF, almost a year ago to the day and the start of the show on the token: Nov. 4th! Among the coins where these wooden tokens. The one pictured above is the oldest. I never got the opportunity to meet him but, her grandfather was an interesting person. He was an engineer (worked for Convair & General Dynamics on multiple aircraft including, I believe, the F-111), knew multiple languages, was a numismatist, jeweler and horologist among other things. The wooden nickel is assumed to be received at the show it mentions. So, 51 years now. There may be other things but, I don't and will probably never know the story behind them.

Sorry guys! Got caught up with a bunch over the weekend and didn't get around to the tallies! Coopertron5000 - 50 years + bonus = 5 points Jbuck - 39 years + bonus = 4 points Arkie - 50 years? + bonus = 5 points Pepactonius - 62 years + bonus = 5 points bd251 - 81 years + bonus = 6 points Spruett001 - 51 years + bonus = 5 points I feel like Arkie's probably belonged to his grandfather longer than bd251's bracelet, but without a solid year figure, I feel like bd251 should be the winner of this round. Fantastic entries, everybody! I love hearing the personal stories behind treasured belongings So if we are all agreed, bd251 is the winner of this round!

Great Britain 1902 Crown Since the 1902 crown was a single year type, I decided to broaden the match requirements a little to allow for an interesting variety of possible four-pointers. Country: 2 points - Great Britain/United Kingdom. Will also accept England or Scotland 1 point - Any coin depicting a British monarch Date: 2 points - 1902 1 point - +/- 15 years (1887-1917) Denomination 2 points - any coin that is approximately crown/dollar sized. 36-41mm (so that Canadian silver dollars are included). 1 point - any fraction or multiple crown, dollar, peso, etc. So basically any coin that says crown, dollar, peso, etc. (e.g. "quarter dollar" or "half dol." or "2 1/2 D." but not "50 cents") Maximum of 6 points Point ties will be broken by closet match. First to post an exact match wins. Round ends 11:00 pm forum time on Thursday, Nov. 9. Hopefully that was clear enough. If not, just ask! Ready, set, GO! edit:typo
