I have dozens upon dozens of different counterstamps that have dried adhesive and paper remnants on the back. It was common in the 60s and 70s to attach them to cards. I have not spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get it off. Just the basic acetone soak (that did nothing) and I tried running one through the dishwasher. That seemed to soften it up. That being said maybe a gentle heat source will soften it up. I'll try and get back to you all.

I got it! I used a vegetable steaming pan on the stove. Put a little water in the bottom and put two different coins in the strainer. I let them steam on low heat for maybe 3 minutes. Took them out and the adhesive came right off with a gentle fingernail. I do have before and after pictures that I'll post later. Hope my experiment helps.
