echizento Moderator United States 23731 Posts	Posted 01/15/2019 3:58 pm Adding to my small collection of Turkoman coins is this AE Dirhem of Qutb al-Din Muhammad b Zengi. Emir of Sinjar from 1197-1219. AE Dirhem Emir facing left with spear over his shoulder. This coin was modeled after a Roman provincial coin of the emperor Caracalla. Kurfic legend around the border with a tamgha under the face. The tamgha was only used during the first year of issue. The revere is a Kurfic legend in five lines with a tamgha under. I love these Islamic figural types, especially the ones loosely based on more familiar Roman or Byzantine models. Interesting note about the tamgha - it's easy to forget that the Turks trace their origin to modern day Mongolia / China. Does it appear anywhere besides this coin? Report this Post to the Staff

That boldly outlined nose reminds me a little of early medieval Spanish coins, although Sinjar is no where close geographically.
