Hi -- I'd be grateful for any thoughts or suggestions as to the identity of this small copper coin, which I've had for many years. I am guessing it may be European and perhaps late medieval, but I don't really know. One side shows a cross surrounded by text (which I cannot decipher), and the other appears to be a man's head with some sort of hat or helmet.

Looks medieval, but I need to do some searching. In the meanwhile, I've taken the liberty of enlarging and enhancing your pics.

On the first pic, I see that the inscription may start SAM--perhaps that is St. Mark?

If your could repost the second one in focus, that would be super-helpful. The cross looks floriated, but the focus isn't sharp enough for me to read any of the inscription.

I am going with St Ambrose, which perhaps makes this a coin of Milan.

Now we need to find the type.

Edit: perhaps this? https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces58712.html

Many thanks for making me welcome, and particular thanks for the very speedy and clever ID - you guys are geniuses! I have been trying without luck to figure out what this coin is for over a decade, and you cracked it in hours. I take my hat off to you -- thank you so very much.

Nice work @tdz, although clearly I should have been more helpful this morning as I happen to own this Denaro (attributed as Biaggi 1517) too.
