1940 Wheat Cent Serif Or Damage? - Coin Community Forum

Yorkish Valued Member United States 255 Posts	Posted 01/25/2021 10:11 am Good morning CoinCommunity! I was going back theough my Wheat penny "keepers" and found this on the R of LIBERTY. All the lettering and the date seem to be a little swollen to me, but I suppose it could just be the effects of wear. The R however, shows something in the top left corner that looks to me almost like a serif. But, given that I'm not very good at spotting them, I would appreciate some community feedback on it. I apologize for the grainy texture on the pic of LIBERTY, my phone camera doesn't like diffused light or macro shots. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 01/25/2021 11:24 am I checked the examples on PCGS to see if they showed any broken hub issues, and there were non there. So I feel this is just damage to the coin. I see something also on the 'I' but it is unrelated to this area as it is on the opposite side. I've keep it safe for now. Not that I feel it is a doubled die, but because of the way the devices are affected. Doe the metal show a wave on the tops of those areas? If so then it is damage for sure.
