1942 S War Nickel Why So Dark?

Compared to another regular 1964 D nickel for it being silver why is it so much darker than a original nickel.

Your 1942 Nickel is comprised of 35% silver. It is a completely different alloy mix than your 1964. It will, and should, be a darker color.

I should have added that only Jefferson nickels from 1942 to 1945 have silver in their composition. Your 1964 Nickel does not contain any silver at all.

Yes surface discoloration. We often see wartime nickels in comparatively darker greys and browns.

It could be caused by the Manganese in the alloy

Agree. I have a modest boatload (life raft, really) of circulated silver War Nickels. Far and away they are darker.

It's the different metal composition . A circulated War Nickel usually has that dark color to it . After 1945 the composition changed thus the lighter color Nickel .
