ICCS Says This Is An 1858 Small Date 5 Cent - I Say What?

Loruca Valued Member Canada 242 Posts	Posted 09/29/2023 1:05 pm My confusion is beyond the pale. I just got back a shipment of about a dozen coins sent to ICCS - In record time! Absolute props for how fast they're doing things these days. Key to this shipment were two coins, a 1955 Fu Manchu - which, when I received it, proceeded to fall right out of the certification sleeve because of a failed heat seal , and the following 1858 5 cent coin, which in my eye, seemed like an obvious large date. It's very possible that I'm the one making the mistake here, but I'd like the forum's input on this! Thanks! LRC Report this Post to the Staff

Something I don't understand about these is that if you look on ebay there are almost as many large dates for sale as small dates in the mid grades, yet the BV of large dates is about eight times that of small dates. I believe the date may have digits which have been repunched with small date digits, not with large date digits. I've only gone through 1/2 of my 1858 five cent coins. Will continue looking. Charlton catalog only has pictures of digits unfortunately. I had same issue as you if I went back to beginning of my search for varieties. Report this Post to the Staff
