This one is not part of the 35 coin batch I bought recently and unfortunately it was not $50. The batch coins resume tomorrow. This one is in a TPG holder and the grade will be revealed in 48. Thoughts? Thanks! Very nice MS-64. Close to a 65, just a few too many cheek marks.

Easy MS-65 in my eyes...fields look good and clean, only 1 large hit below eye and I'd gander a guess and say that those "ticks" on her cheek and jaw don't show much in hand.....nice coin. Now for the wait....

Very nice 1878-CC! Two lines of thought here on the technical grade. First, at the start of the pandemic, I saw quite a few comparable Morgans coming through slabbed as MS-65/MS-65+. There has been a little bit of tightening since then. Second, to my eyes, though, on a bourse floor this would be seen as MS-64/MS-64+. The reverse is a strong point, and should bump it to the plus. I may well part company with a TPG on this coin, but I'm at a bourse floor MS-64+. I can't tell from the photo whether this snags a CAM designation. It's close, if it doesn't. The overall appearance is very nice. Keep an eye on the tiny spots below the eagle's right wingtip (our visual left), mainly to watch for changes over time. They aren't an issue right now, and should be stable in the slab.

Also would note that there is a big jump in price from a 4 to a 5. 64s sell for $780-1,320 with a recent sale in September at the top of that range. 65s have sold recently for $2,280-2,640. This is for PCGS graded coins which appear to trade at a premium. Apparently 78cc's are very baggy and gem examples are scarce.

I think that I may have purchased a fake coin in a fake holder. I went to the PCGS Museum of Coin Holders ( https://www.pcgs.com/holdermuseum) to try to identify which generation holder this was. Lo and behold, there is no holder with this specific obverse label. This green obverse label does not have 'PCGS' printed on it and has a bar code. This combination does not exist according to the PCGS Museum. The reverse label looks correct for the Gen. 2 and 3 PCGS holders. Looks like I'll have to return this one. I will reach out to PCGS to ask if they ever issued this label. Thoughts? Thanks! I also checked the certification number and it does turn up as an MS64 graded 1878-CC Morgan dollar.

I contacted PCGS describing this issue and we'll see what they say about it.
Also would think that if someone went through the trouble of faking this holder, they would use a facsimile of a real, existing label. Why would they just make up a fake label when they went to the trouble of making everything else look real?

The obverse label is similar to the Gen 1.2 label, and there was some overlap with the Gen 2 labels in September 1989. I wonder if it was some kind of transitional slab when they first introduced the barcode, that wasn't used much and not included in the museum of holders?

I asked that same question when I reached out to PCGS. They should let me know soon and I will report what they say.

It is an awful good looking fake if that's what it is. My gut keeps saying this is genuine. Waiting to see your results.
