about an hour ago I was handed this coin:

1997-10-Deutsche-Mark

1997-10-Deutsche-Mark

i was sitting outside with one of my yard customers when the neighbor walked up and gave me this coin. I was studying this coin as she sat & spoke with my customer. I was intrigued by the tarnishing, indicating some amount of silver, so I started hunting for info online; the small print on the coin was difficult to read through the tarnish.

info I found online states that it is 62.5% silver.

Nice - that's $22.77 of silver there!
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

last week she gave me a large old prescription bottle that was about 1/3 full of old foreign coins. a lot of it was cruddy, mostly 1950s-60s-70s european coins pre-euro era, but I didn't see any silver in any of that stuff. I was surprised that she gave the deutschmark to me.

Nice find! That's an unusual sort of coin to turn up randomly like that, as the silver commemorative 10 Marks was a high value coin (face value around US$5 at the time) and you never saw them in circulation, although if you were lucky you could get them for face value from major banks for a few months after they were issued. On various trips to Germany in the 1980s and 1990s I got a few different ones, but not this one.
