1945-S 25c MMS-004 Ball Serif S MS 66 Variety

Bornage New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 05/18/2026 10:15 pm I've been unsure what to make of this coin ever since my 1945-S 25c ANACS variety submission returned as "MMS-004 Ball Serif S", so I'm soliciting input. Cert# 7620924 Has anyone else had a 1945-S Washington quarter attributed as Ball Serif S by ANACS or any other TPG? Wexler documented the Ball Serif S on 1946-S Lincoln cents and studied 1945-S Washington quarter doubled dies — but specifically noted those carried the Trumpet Tail S, not the Ball Serif S No FS number exists in the Cherrypicker's Guide for Ball Serif S on any Washington quarter date CONECA's DDR-001 listing notes MMS-004 as a reverse marker for that variety — implying it was observed but never formally catalogued as a standalone variety Has anyone in the Washington quarter variety community formally researched or documented the Ball Serif S punch on quarters? Brandmeister Pillar of the Community United States 6476 Posts	Posted 05/18/2026 11:53 pm The ball S or knob S mint mark seems to be the predominant punch on 1945-S quarters. I imagine that it's regarded as the default by the TPGs. For example, there probably aren't many slabs that attribute a 1941 Small-S nickel. That's the common type, where the Large S is the exception. However, If you requested variety attribution, then I guess they will put just about any specific detail on the slab. Depending on how they tag that in their database, that might produce a sub-population of one coin. Obviously, many or even most of the 400+ quarters graded for 1945-S will have a ball-S mint mark.
