Can you take a picture of the coin in direct light to see how it compares with those 71-Ds I posted? Good eye on that one, jbuck. I might give it a try, but no promises. Here's an Ike I got in change a few weeks ago (It wasn't offered, I had to ask for it). It's been around for a while, but I guess there's still a few out there circulating.   |

Very cool find congratulations,you are right you can occasionally find them in banks and even had stations but it is getting harder and harder

Spotted a guy paying with a large silver coin today at a gas station. Since I was next in line I asked if I could see the large coin the gentleman in front of me payed with. Ended up getting this as change today as a result.  |

Well, now that is cool, MontCollector. You actually witnessed an Ike circulate in 2018! FYI: Coin Week just published an article on 1971 Eisenhower dollars, and they mentioned proof planchet Ikes from Denver. They refer to them as struck on "highly polished planchets." Nothing interesting about this one except the story. Got it from my mother-in-law in Thailand a few years ago. She worked in accounting at the US Embassy for 20+ years and probably got it as some form of payment. So this one circulated from Philadelphia to Bangkok and then back to the US via me.  |

Amen Darth!...Proof Planchet 71's used to be a hot topic with Rob Erzerman...he loved those coins as much as the true "Very Early Die State" specimens. Written up in the big IKE Book, "PP's" are freakin awesome in hand..once you've seen one, watchout...very addicting...Rob, and the other founding fathers, did rough math to discuss just how rare these puppies are..I don't have my book handy, but, going to get it out, and re-read. The strange thing about these also is many were made on very worn dies---BUT, the lack of annealing chatter marks, "" 5 to 10% of 1971-D Ikes show remarkably proof-like surfaces on both sides, including the top surface of the rims and minor devices, independent of die state. There is also a remarkable absence or near-absence of planchet chatter, the multitudinous minor defects for which a loupe may or may not be needed, which are caused by the violent banging experienced by the circulation planchets as they cool off in the huge annealing drums while being kept suspended by baffles (proof planchets are annealed on a slowly moving belt and are then burnished in a vat of moving oblong steel balls). ====== http://ikegroup.info/prototype.htm |

What's up with the scar on Ike's eyebrow? I honestly never noticed it before I posted my image above, I thought it was weird that Ike took a hit exactly along the eyebrow, and then @stewart's coin has the same thing! MontCollector's has it too. I guess obviously it's part of the design?  |
