Hi everyone. I picked up this Walker in a lot of 20 on the Bay. I paid about $7 for it (and every other coin in the lot). There is a fairly nasty ding at 8:30 near the rim. Other than that, its just normal wear. Doesn't appear to have ever been cleaned, and has better color than the pics provide.

I filled 9 holes with this lot, so it was well worth it to me as I set out to finish a Walker set. The 38D is also on the way, obtained in another 20 coin lot, at a better price.

I'd call it G4, and well worth $7 even with the dig. That should fill that annoying hole in your set, at least until a nicer one comes along.
Rest in Peace

I think it has G-6 details at least imo. There is a lot of rim and date, and most G-4s I've seen are lacking in these.

G4 is fine by me. It'll fill the hole while I focus on other dates until a reasonable upgrade pops up.

I'm thinking of working on my walking lib set too...still basically missing all of the keys, except the 21-s and 16-d.

Just a review (mostly for me!)

Walking Liberty Half Dollar General Grading Standards

G4 Good - Rims are defined. Motto IN GOD WE TRUST readable.

VG8 Very Good - Motto is distinct. About half of shirt lines at left are clear.

F12 Fine - All skirt lines evident, but worn in spots. Details in sandal below motto are clear.

VF20 Very Fine - Skirt lines sharp including leg area. Little wear on breast and right arm.

EF40 Extremely Fine - All skirt lines bold.

AU50 About Uncirculated - Slight trace of wear on head, knee and breast tips also on the claws and head.

MS60 Uncirculated - No trace of wear. Light blemishes.

MS63 Select Uncirculated - Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired.

MS65 Choice Uncirculated - No trace of wear. Barely noticeable blemishes.

PF65 - Choice Brilliant surfaces with no noticeable blemishes or flaws. May have a few scattered barely noticeable marks or hairlines.

G-4 is a definite, but not VG-8. So G-6 it is!

Here's mine. (Not much better than a G-6 either).

Moe, according to Bruce Fox, for 1921 and before, the skirt lines should be ignored for grading. I think your 1916 is VG8.

I'm not as organized as afcop, but I formatted the following document and put it in my nerdy notebook for quick reference:

Steve / Moe, et al

The same thing (21 and Pre) is mentioned in ANA grading standards (1991) which I have been using. So does this mean that it gets bumped up a grade? Thanks

Also the same book states that a lot of the 40-46 SF strikes are weak and a few others others. How do weak strikes come into play when grading? Thanks again.

AFC, nice score for the $'s invested. I paid a lot more.

Peace

Ceylon, it appears the rim is just about touching a few letters on the reverse, so the best your coin would be G6 in my opinion. As far as strike: that doesn't affect the grade until you get middle MS range...and MS65 can have an average strike.
