What happened to it? It seems like a small lump of metal on the breast. Doesn't come off. Is it PMD?

Not PMD. It's from the die. I can't access VamWorld but there are a couple of 1878-S Vams with this diagnostic. From memory you might check VAM 16 and 29.

Funny, I'm currently trying to take pictures of a 1889-P that I think is a know VAM but I struggling with the camera. The 1887-S just looked odd to me.

PS I know practically nothing of vams but having been trying reading up on the subject the last few days.

I think the term instead of "lump of metal" it is called a die chip

Ok. It's a die chip. And I'll name it Lumpy.

A small clump of feathers gave way over there.
