Rev 78 describes the use of the reverse design used only in 1878, plus a couple of slightly-newer mintages - a few in 1879 plus 1880-CC. The reverse has the parallel arrow feathers and "sunken" breast of the first two Morgan reverse types; later in 1878, a new reverse with slanted arrow feathers and a convex breast was introduced. Like so:

Rev '78:
1879-Morgan-VAM-39-REV-78

Rev '79 and later:
1879-Morgan-VAM-39-REV-78

look at the pictures posted above, and concentrate on the feathers on top of the arrow shaft. On the 78 Reverse you will see the top feather is at the same angle of the other feathers, on the 79 REV you will notice the top feather is at an angle and sticking up. All Morgans after 1878 except for 1921 have the Reverse of 79 and if it has the top feather like the 1878 REV above they will call it the date on the coin with a Reverse of 78. If this just confused you more let me know and I will try to break it down further with my own pictures, I just find this a little easier to see in pictures than the breast sometimes

Hey thanks guys! I learn something new every day. I will say everyone I have run in to on here has been great. I hope I can learn enough to repay the kindness.
