I think AU 50 but I am by no means an expert on the series.

I think it goes XF45 not quite AU50 with the wear on the shield. I like it a lot though!

EF40 Extremely Fine- Leaf tips show slight wear. Cross over shield slightly worn.
AU50 About Uncirculated- Traces of light wear on only the high points of the design. Half of mint luster is present.

I have a similar looking one that graded AU55. So I will say AU55.

ANACS seems to be pretty tight on greades lately so I'll go with AU-53 today, but 24 months ago it might have been an MS. In fact I think it is mint state and that is not wear it looks more like a typical weak strike, common in the shield series.

Grading from static photos is hard, I like to see the coin rotate and observe the cartwheel effect the light makes, to pick out subtle wear or rub spots, something a photo can't always convey.

But it sure looks Unc weak strike MS-62

considering how big the cracks are, and the nice fields on this coin I would have to say that this was struck with a worn die and it might get graded as high as MS63.

The coin is in an older, smaller ANACS slab and it is graded AU50. I agree with westcoin that the lack of detail has more to do with a weak strike than wear. In hand, the coin has a lot of luster. I sent the coin in to PCGS hoping that it would crossover to a higher grade. I'll let you know the results when I have them (probably about 5-6 weeks from now.)

Is the surface area inside the die crack raised above the outlying surface that much to displace all the weak detail.
One can not really tell from a 2D photo..
Once again, awesome die crack and good luck on the cross-over.

I just got my grades back from PCGS. They graded it AU55. This is my first crossover upgrade. I am happy!

Coins undergraded in ANACS holders have been very good to you. Congrats again.

I would say AU 50. Unfortunately Shield nickels were known for their die cracks.

Out of curiosity, what was the reason for sending it in to PCGS? Was it worth the grading fees to have the coin elevated from a 50 to a 55? I agree with their grade and it's a very nice coin.

I know there is not that big a difference in price guide value between AU50 and AU55, but there are a few reasons why I sent this one in. I bought the coin for my certified type set, but I knew there was a good chance that I will upgrade this coin at some point because I am hoping to have all of the nickels in mint state. If and when I do sell it, it will be a lot easier to sell in a PCGS slab than an ANACS slab. I had a few other crossovers to submit so it did not cost me all that much to add this one to the submission. Also, I got a good deal on it, so I thought I would still get my money back if for some reason it did not cross over.
