I was expecting you to come back with 67 or 68. I guess the criteria for PR Morgans is much more stringent than circulation strikes.

It's a beauty. Do I see a 10 degree rotation?

As far as rotation I think they placed it in the holder a bit off but I will check it.

Beautiful coin!

I was unaware that the US made proof that far back.

I see imperfections in the fifth left star, possibly the P and you in PLURIBUS, and both U's in UNUM. A few miscellaneous nicks in the reverse lettering are also present. Yeah, this is enough to downgrade a Morgan Proof, even though this is a slam-dunk 67 as a Business Strike.

Offered at Heritage, I would expect it to fetch at or near $6000.

Russ, Super coin, I must admit when I first scrolled down to see the prize, I thought uh-oh, someone is remaking California Prooflikes again, then I clicked on the full size image and saw the sharp stars and lettering, and knew it was a real proof. It sure fooled me and in a certifed holder too, I was thinking how is that possible NGC? iPhone screen was HD but just too small.

Beautiful proof - congrats on a nice addition to the collection!

For those of you that don't know what a California Proof is; it is a very sophisticated way of etching and whizzing a Morgan dollar to have the appearance of prooflike or proof. In the 80's when the market was going strong many top dealers were fooled for quite awhile before catching on to the scam. I had a 1883-O that many considered a branch mint proof, as it was so close to perfection, (unfortuntaely that was one of the coins that I lost in a burglary of my home), I'm pretty sure it was not a proof but a very deceptive etched coin, be nice to have it today for a TPG to see it and find out what bodybag they would put it in.

Dave, There was a NGC 1883 PF 65 cameo sold by Heritage the day I bought this one at the show. It hammered at 6350.00, so your are spot on. It it was a business strike I would put it at a 68+ DMPL

The Smithsonian has proof sets going as far back as 1819
