Could you post a pic of your smile director cones mounted in the setup? I have spent the last hour re-reaging threads trying to ID what these items are and specifically how they work.

sure Earle will do. I will take some photo and explain how I use the cone. but first trying out a ring light the coin is in a 2 x 2. the ring light has been attached. to a enlarger lens. this ring light looks pretty promising. but it is way to bright for what we want on coins. once I figured out how to dim the light down works great. no lens reflections either. plus this ring light is a great price in the USA. the ring light can be mounted on a lens 49 mm to 72 mm. all the adapters are supplied

made some changes to the cone smile director. I understand now. why ray tells us to calibrate these. to the coin we are photographing. this is a silver dollar 1965 lots of doubling. the doubling is on both sides of this coin. this coin is in a 2 x 2.

This would be very helpful. Also, what type of material does one use to make the director?

Thanks!

Mark...the basic diffusion material is Canson Opalux. Whether you put it over your Jansjo's directly like I show early in this thread, mount it to your lens as I've shown in other threads, or attach it to a section of a thread cone, the result is similar. So start with the Opalux and then experiment with the various ways to use it...Ray

Awesome! Thank you very much Ray.

P.S. I just ordered two 19" × 24" sheets from Blick, item #10240-5919, @$3.63 each plus $3.00 handling, and $0.61 sales tax. (If you buy 10 sheets it's $3.21 each with no handling charge.) They have several shipping options via FedEx or USPS.

"Opalux is a translucent, 110 lb weight paper with a satin finish that's ideal for drawing and color prints. It's also great for creating translucent cards and decorations."

(Note: That is not an affiliate link and I have no relationship with the company - just found them with a Google search. Their website was fast, user-friendly, and easy to order.)

i had to photography for a friend. some very high end Canadian error coins. I was not long figuring out. why ray use these cones for copper pennies. these pennies are pristine. older copper Canadian errors. these errors are not listed anywhere. I had to promise not to show these images. all I can say for know is. I can not wait for these to hit ebay. ray thank you. I under stand more and more why you ray developed this practice. once these coins hit ebay my commitment is over. its all about the light. how it hits the coin.
