Here is a [much] larger image of the reverse, if it helps with attribution/grading:

It's VAM-9 - the die scratch from the wreath to the O is killer. There's a lot of die scratching on the reverse of this variety if you want to look for it. Closer to 60 than 63, IMO, and somewhat above market. 63's are going for $300 at Heritage and 62's are around $250. However, 1878-CC is a date that is almost guaranteed to come to your price point eventually.

Quote: However, 1878-CC is a date that is almost guaranteed to come to your price point eventually. Yeah, that's what I figured. I wasn't expecting to get a bargain from APMEX, but was assuming they wouldn't rip me off. As I mentioned, the timing was right to pick it up when and where I did (I also snagged a BU 1921 Peace dollar for $300 at the same time), and I wouldn't have been able to justify getting it elsewhere (or elsewhen) for even half the price.

Quote: It's VAM-9 - the die scratch from the wreath to the O is killer. Hmmmmm... Are you sure about that? I know next to nothing about VAMs, but the resources I found online indicated that VAM-9 was specifically for the 1878P and not the 1878CC. Also, I didn't see any mention of the die crack in the description of the VAM-9.

Ah, you are absolutely correct! Definitely the same coin. I was obviously looking at the wrong resource...

I think the hits are too severe and it would be an honest MS60.
SuperDave love those VAMs.

my first thought when I saw this coin was a MS-61, I don't think it looks bad enough (for lack of a better word) to be a MS-60 (because I have seen some dogs in MS-60 plastic) and don't think it would quite make MS-62 either

I thought the hits were quite severe on the cheek, focal point, but you are probably Bryan1315 MS61
