If this was a Marine Corps Infantryman, yes, I would buy one.
But its not, so I won't.

I think that every American should buy one of these and the premium charged by the mint should get collected and sent to all the Grunts that have served and died in the conflict in Afghanistan. It would be a fantastic way of saying thank you to those men and women that have put their lives on the line to protect the US way of life.

Thanks for that, Bryan.
As far as bullion, this is way overpriced in my opinion. I don't know if modern commemoratives like these tend to appreciate in value over time, but I'd guess not much (if at all). I'd buy it if the subject matter or design really caught my eye (I do own a Bald Eagle commemorative and an Ellis Island commemorative), but this one just doesn't really speak to me.

I think that is a good design... It's not as cluttered as they usually are...

Ordered a pair of the Uncirculated coins on Thursday, along with a few of the special "Defenders" sets (50,000 mintage, includes the Proof coin).
I've been collecting US commems for quite some time and look forward to each year's new issues. The Star Spangled Banner coins will be out in just a few weeks and then it will be the long wait until next year for new coins. That's OK, however, as I much prefer a limited number of releases each year to the over issue abuse we've had in the past.
I saw a few comments in the thread about the bullion value of these coins -- the US commem series is not about bullion value. If you're goal is investment in precious metals, there are better choices from the US Mint. The commem series is more about celebrating US history and supporting worthy causes. IMHO

For me, coins are about collecting, not investing. However, I know that "rule" does not apply to everyone. That being said, there are some coins that are better for investing than others; modern commemorative coins are not them.

Coin in hand now. I think the crossed rifles on the back look ok, and the detail on the soldier's camo is pretty cool. The only design problem I have with most recent modern proofs is the type face. Looks dated.
Overall quality of the coin I received puts it in MS-69 territory.

Just received my pair today. The UNC may go 70 but the proof has a distracting milk spot around 9 o'clock on the obverse. They are snuggled in the Dansco next to their MOA brothers.

I also got mine today (1 proof and 1 uncirculated) they look very good. However, at this time I didn't purchase a defender of freedom set because I truly felt that it was gimmicky in nature and really didn't see it as a fit for coin collecting. I hope that I don't come to regret that decision.
I will most likely go back to the well and purchase at least one or two more proof and uncirculated coins.

I received mine yesterday as well. It's only the second commem I've purchased an was quite pleased. I purchased the uncirc version. Nothing against the Army (I'm active Navy myself) but I would have loved to see the mint put out a commem with the 50th anniversary of John Glenn's first orbit around the earth or something along those lines. True American hero! I do like the infantryman coin though.

It looks nice in hand, the finish of the unc is quite pleasing & may turn out to be this year's Army half dollar. Might get a few more before the end of the introductory period now that the 5oz ATB have gone off sale for product repricing.
