Starting to become a coin hoarder. As hard as I try to keep everything in its place and fill each type of album, I still have single coins all over the shelves of my "Vault". Don't need to part with anything so I don't want to.

Back when I could buy 22ct for £5 a gram I used to take any decent soveriegns as wages for overtime, I sold those when I was desperate for some cash a few years ago (I got £18 a gram or something back on them so I made a profit)
That was the only occasion I have ever sold a coin, I only buy coins I like and if I like it I keep it :)

Quote: I'd like to start, but I'm still learning so I'm gathering info and watching auctions & realized prices before I start putting cash down for coins I'm looking to liquidate rather than keep. I'd like to start to, I have Morgans I want to sell maybe on ebay, or trade. I going tomorrow morning to see a local coin dealer here in town, I'm going to see if I can trade some of them to him. I have a feeling it'll be a good experience, he's pretty much the only guy in town, has been for quite a while. He and I went to high school together, that's 40+ years ago. I think he'll want to keep a good reputation, I think he wants to help me learn. He buys and sells coins everyday, and hardly uses the internet. Imagine that...

I don't buy coins , simply to 'flip' them, for a profit. There is only one occasion I have actually done this, with the intention of making a profit. I bought 300 enamelled badges at a car show trailer sale, for $85, and sold them to a dealer for $120. No problem for me to move them on; I don't collect enamelled badges Upgrading, for me would be the only reason. For cheaper coins, nothing wrong with using ebay, for a source of re spending money.

I'm a flipper for sure. However, if my coins don't sell right away I like to hold them especially ancient coins. Learn about them, and display/admire them for their collectible value. So I guess I wear two masks. If money wasn't king, id only collect... My only profits though come from coin roll hunting and on Craigslist flip. I don't know enough about coins yet I suppose to flip on ebay only or heritage/eBay. If anyone is really good at flipping on ebay and heritage, please email me via the email icon.

I've only done this with the intention of trading, not for profit, as I do not sell anything. I keep thinking I'll sell online someday, but never get around to it...to busy searching and sorting. No one in my area trades anymore though. My local "coin" shops are only interested in cash, silver and gold.

I thought the idea of flipping coins ... was to place it in the crook of your index finger and thumb and flip? Now I read that I have been wrong all these years?

I've bought lots with the intention of only keeping some of the coins and selling the rest, but I don't really buy single coins for resale.

I'm on a limited budget, so generally when I want to upgrade I just have to sell the current coin. So when I buy those I have no intention of selling on, but if it becomes a means to an end...
A few coins I've part exchanged with other collectors or dealers, again, for better coins or money to buy better coins.
Generally, being a 'collector' not a dealer I pay more for my coins because I'm not considering potential resale. That means that much of the time I barely make back what I spent, if that. I don't mind too much breaking even, but I do rather resent making a loss!
A couple of times I've bought coins that I already have because I think in due course I might be able to sell them on. Firstly, it's a way of funding coins I want.
But I also consider that it's a way of encouraging other collectors. The coins I buy I study and classify. I correctly identify them and will happily tell any potential buyer how scarce I think they are, or how difficult it might be to get another like it.
Because of what I collect, most times it won't be easy to find a similar coin as I offer. I try to buy 'nice' coins and pick up the scarcer ones that generalist collectors don't recognise.
Today (for the first time, apart from unwanted coins in auction lots I sell on straight away) I bought a coin in a series I don't collect because it looked nice and I don't think I've seen much better. I plan on finding maybe a few other nice coins that I like to broaden the collection a little bit. But if a coin I do collect and I want comes up and I have to sell this one on ... I will do.
If that makes sense?

I started selling about 3 years ago when I first got layoff from my real job, and have been doing since, but not on full time as I found another job few months later. I occasionally sell on ebay and have my own site...need time to update site!

I have yet to sell much of anything. I've bought off ebay but not yet sold anything there. My LCS treats me very well when purchasing but on trading up, he seems to offer MUCH less than FMV.... Like others have wrote, I've bought a number of coins that were undergraded that I want to sell. I need to start selling to be able to upgrade. One day.......

Secret to ebay is great pics. Don't skimp on pics. I buy Indians on ebay that are hard to see and no one bids on. I turn around and sell them just for the fun of it to see how much more I can get than I paid.

Flipping coins is how I got started collecting. It is also how I built up enough moeny to purchase my first rental property. I usually look for at least 20% profit
