The mint mark was hand punched into the die. The position will vary. Starting in 1990(I think that's the correct year) the mint mark was on the hub (I would think it would be the master hub).

Hi, does that picture for small/large date apply to all lincoln cents, or only 1970? Just found a 1974-s and according to that it's Large date.

Here are some more descriptions of the 1970 S:

And the 1974 (and something interesting on the 1974 S):

The 1974 small/large date are pretty easy by comparison. If a 1974 cent looks like a mushy pile of crap, it's probably a small date.

Also on the 1970S Small Date "Liberty" is very weak...I always check that first.

You guys are awesome and so helpful! I actually believe that it's a 1974-s small date. I will try to get a picture up by tomorrow for confirmation. I don't think it carries a premium, but i'd just like to know if I detected it correctly. :)

The 1974 ones run about 50-50%. So no premium would be attached for these.

What does "recolored mean? I found this and it states it has been "Recolored"...does that mean cleaned or plated? Never heard of that before...

It means cleaned and then re-toned in an effort to make it look natural.

Besides the standard PUP'S known for years to help tell the difference between the small date Lincoln Cent and the Large date Cent, I have found one that is NOT in any texts, a small date coin has the ends of the 9 both pointed, where the Large date coin, the ends are blunt and flat looking, is an excellent pup, more importantly works every time!!! Good luck,Hello COOP,I hope you too are well, You my friend have it correct, where did you learn this, was it the research I know you do or?
