Coins Of San Marino

I was in charge of the FAO coin programme between 1995 and 2008 and although 1981 was before my time I do not have any information that the other coins were part of the World Food Day set. I wwould be grateful if you could let me have the source of this information

Gerhard Schön, author of the "Weltmünzkatalog", a German-language catalog of 20-21c world coins. I have the 2011 edition; on page 1931 it says "FAO Welternährungstag 1981 - 1. Ausgabe (9)". That is "FAO World Food Day 1981, First Series (9 coins)". It then lists the nine coins that svslav posted here. A few catalog numbers later comes part two (2. Ausgabe), with the scudo coins you mentioned.

The way I understand this is: San Marino used all twelve pieces with a food or nutrition theme as a reference to the 1981 World Food Day. Only one of these, however, is actually a FAO coin and says so ...

Maybe the publishing house needs to use different fonts, or at least font sizes, for "headlines" and "sublines". :) Or maybe San Marino is a special "problem" as they used to issue those annual sets in the lira years ... What I mean is this:

The 1994 "circulation" coin series has the common theme of the "Life and Legend of Saint Marinus". That headline applies to ten coins, from 1 lira to 1000 lire. Above the 200 lire you see the text "FAO"; that means the 200 lire coin is a FAO piece. If Gerhard Schön had wanted to say that the L.500 and L.1000 coins were FAO issues too, he would have written "FAO (3)", to indicate three issues.

Same thing for the 1995 series: The whole set has the theme "Civil responsibility/obligation for the third millennium" (my on-the-fly translation from German), and abve the L.500 coin you see "50 Jahre FAO". Had the L.1000 coin been issued as a FAO coin too, the sub-header would say "50 Jahre FAO (2)".

It is a little complicated, and I do think that more typographic variety could help clarifying this. :)

I'm not sure what's going on chemically with the second one, it doesn't look unattractive (to me) though.

the 1983 are some of oddest designs - I think the idea (Nuclear Holocaust) was somehow lost, the 500 Lire seems to be commemorating some sort of cow scaring competition to me.

Got another set, 1980 XXII Summer Olympics in Moscow, the ones that US boycotted.











The case of 50 lire I would call a design error. Signore Crocetti seems to go overboard trying to cover a broad spectrum of sports. Yes, at that time both Summer and Winter Olympics were held the same year, but the obverse explicitly states "XXII Olympics" which were Summer Olympics in Moscow. Since the Winter Olympics started later their numbering is lagging behind. In 1980 it was XIII WO in Lake Placid, USA. Interestingly, XXII WO are coming up in 2014, and they will be held in Russia as well, city of Sochi.
