Damaged. The coin to a hit from another coin.

That looks like damage at the bottom of the D but at the top of the D looks like an OMM. John1

GREAT NEWS from Dr. Wiles...packet returned today.."1981-D RPM-OO1, stage A, EDS, Nice! Only second one reported." Makes my day, bigtime...since so many nickels have crossed the paths of variety hunters, and just 2 known makes me think this was probably a 1-die coin situation, for whatever reason...mint worker probably spotted the RPM, pulled the die, and, polished it out, leaving an unknown few to be put into circulation...just my hunch. My lucky day..in a bank roll of nickels, I nabbed a 2005 D WDDR-001 Business Strike Ocean in View...took more than a year to find another one of these.

I vaguely remember sometime during a Morgan dollar Variety search, information that examples of(whatever I was hunting for, I cann't recall), the VAM would have been found in lower grades only, then, the mint polished out the die, changing the look...I suspect this may be the case here...since thousands of BU rolls of 1981-D coins have been examined over the last 31 years, and, to my knowledge, no mint state example exists, this RPM may only be found in circulated coinage..just my "2-cents" worth... Speaking of dies, I just got my June CoinWorld Magazine, and was reading about the 75th anniversary of the San Francisco Mint, and, an incredible inside-look article(and GREAT PICTURES) of the production of the Silver Eagle Proof Dies....wow...a HECK of a lot more complicated than I ever knew...fascinating read....as stated earlier, if any CCF members in the S.F. Bay Area want to hook up, and go over to the S.F. Mint for a tour, I'd love to go..never been down there. Cal

This is not a RPM. A RPM is a D/D. This is a OMM. D/P. I see that now. All I could see at first was the coin contact at the bottom. So many times this is usually all that is going on. With the poor color and not mention in the description (or I missed it) I spotted the obvious. Sorry.

Coop..Dr. Wiles attributed this as RPM-OO1...I can email him, and ask him why he de-bunked the OMM aspect, if you wish. Cal

No biggie. It will probably be in a future E-disk when they get to it.

I agree with the OMM description along with Coop. Not to try to second guess Dr. Wiles; he's way more up on all of this than I, but that really looks to be a P beneath the D. He might have meant OMM instead of RPM. But again, I shouldn't second guess a leading expert.

It is probably a D/D, not a D/P. Making it a RPM. A second look helped me to see that.

Ok, I got the bug, and ordered a few 1981-D rolls to hunt, Original Bank Rolls, NF String.....odds are very low, but, we'll see....if anything, maybe I be lucky with some full step higher grade coins to hoard...bank Roll hunting has allowed me to swap out Jefferson's with full steps in the album I won on ebay(1938-2003, complete with proofs from 62-up----my 1 rainbow-toned 1939-P, reverse of 40, pretty much "paid" for the entire album cost, which was less than $122.00)..it's slow, and, they are pretty tough even past, say 1995, as you all know, from circulated rolls...my best find yesterday was an 86-P, with FS...I'll say one thing, one person's opinion on FULL STEPS can be, er, interesting...I prefer to be as tough as possible, and, use the 6-step method, and, they have to be PERFECT, with only acceptable tiny nicks in area..no cut lines, or mushy steps allowed in my upgrades...funny how NGC uses 5 steps and PCGS does 6...not sure what Anacs does...gotta look at their web page, and see. Off to the bank..gotta run!
