I don't think that's necessarily true. It very well could spread out to penny size and just be very thin I think.

I have to agree the diagnostics look "off".
My guess is that it's lighter than a normal IHC.
What does it weigh?

Its grossly underweight. I'm going with counterfeit. Are you sure this is not an 1877? Not to say that anybody wouldn't counterfeit an 1878, but it would be more common to come upon one dated 1877.

Just a thought. I do know of a Judd aluminum pattern IHC but that's an 1872. Hmm.

This morning I saw a specialist here in Montreal and he told me it was not sure if it real coins. I'm now to the step of grading it. I will let you know when it's done.

I suspect it's some kind of counterfeit strike on a white metal planchet. It suffered some damage later on. Note the rough and poorly defined letters of LIBERTY, the interrupted D of UNITED and the abnormally shallow relief of the right oak leaf. Too many red flags for comfort.
Error coin writer and researcher.
