They are big enough. Those are amazing proofs. The 2 cent and barber are nice exceedingly nice coins.

Many of those are really amazing looking. Separate proofs of older coins are far from easy to find. Usually at coin shows I see many separate proof coins but usually all are modern. Not often are there any of the older ones as shown here. That would make for an anazing collection if one of each from each year of each type.

I didn't know that cameo proofs were available for Franklin halves. All I've ever seen are standard proofs.

Back then they didn't try to make cameo proofs. When the dies were hardened the surfaces would be slightly rough from the oxides that formed during the heating. When the dies were then polished they didn't try to get the polishing down into the devices because it would be too difficult to do so. So the devices retained that slight roughness. On the struck coins that roughness scattered the light and resulted in the cameo contrast. After 30,40 50 coins etc the metal movement across the devices polished away that slight roughness and the cameo fades away on the coins. So the cameo is only there on the every early coins from each die. So the number of cameos is very small and almost every thing you see are brilliant proofs.

Cameo Franklins are really hard to find, but, you can find them.

It's more common to find one side with a cameo and the other without than to find one with an entire cameo.

just carl and coindog: thanks.personally my favorite is the 1868 half dollar.
Just carl: that would be impossible for me.but, at the moment what I've been working on is a type set of each type minus the dollars and the Shield nickel with rays,1859 indian head and the copper nickel indian, flying eagle, the Three Cent Silver, and of course minus the seated with arrows and the bust stuff, large cent, half cents, twenty cent piece and Half Dimes.minus that stuff.besides those my goal is to get all the rest not mentioned.hopefully.i have a good majority already.
conder and yankee1227: so true its hard to find them but attainable. Also so many like Conder said one side is cameo other side is not.
mkman123: Thanks .i absolutely am more astonished with your set though.

Thanks Conder. Did not know that. Modern cameos are done intentionally by blasting the dies before polish, correct?

I have several proof early type coins. For many series in the late 1800's the proofs for certain dates are cheaper than the mint state business strikes so they can be the more economical choice. Plus, in most cases the proofs show the coin design to best advantage.

My early proofs include:
1854 J-160 pattern large cent
1870 cent
1873 two-cent
1873 three-cent silver
1884 three-cent nickel
1887 nickel
1915 nickel
1867 Half Dime
1904 dime
1939 dime
1942 dime
1878 20-cent
1885 quarter
1880 half dollar
1914 half dollar

No proof silver dollars or classic gold, but I can dream!

Jaobler: very true statement. One reason why I love proofs.wow an 1878 Twenty Cent Piece?id love to own one, one day.i could dream as well and and large cent pattern?the 1873 Two Cent and Three Cent as well?and a 1915 buffalo?very impressive set.thats kind of what I'm aiming towards.well similar minus the dollars, patterns, buffalo, etc.if you could ever.would love to just look in awe at the pattern and the Twenty Cent Piece along with the two 1873's along with the Buffalo nickel.if you have a picture.thanks.

I love the classic proofs and have always said I would have a proof Morgan since I started collecting, the only thing that bothers me is they really seem to be plagued with polish lines all over them. When I find one I really like (without the polish lines) I will probably go broke trying to buy it

All my modern coins in the 7070 type set are proofs
Silver proofs when they were minted.
But cant afford proofs in the older coins.
