Thanks Doucet I missed that one. From what I can make out of the legends it seems to match. I felt that the OP coin and mine would be the same type. Not even close.

I think its is similar to mine. This is from Roman Pergamum Mysia 40-60 AD Senate/ Rome. I have one in bad condition..Similar but Seante / Trajan frim Attea, also in Mysia.  |

Since you took the coin down to bare metal, I might suggest you get a product called Deller's Darkener. It won't replace the patina, but your coin won't look shiny like a new penny either. I had a Gordian III I purchased that was somewhat shiny. Here is the results after using Deller's on it:  I haven't taken a pic of it lately, but Deller's continues to darken for a while after it's been applied. Edited by Bing

Well, I'm not sure. If I keep it, I wont require a fake patina... But if I keep it depends on how much its worth, If Its worth a considerable amount, ill sell it and buy another batch of uncleaned coins. Would a potential buyer prefer it if its darkened?
Just give me a stab in the dark about the price.
And Ancient noob, that might be the very same coin! Certainly looks that way.

The darkener is not to fool anyone. It's just to keep it from looking like a shiny penny. It is not patina, fake or real. Just darkens the coin. And, to answer your question, I would prefer a coin not to be shiny. Value? I dunno. It's in poor condition, but it all depends on the actual attribution. Much better condition than mine was - to be honest, I'm happy with how it came out. The patina hid all the details. But heck, 170 euros in good condition with patina? Translate that to 20 euros, and id be a happy person.
Ill work on the attribution, if I can get a better date it will sway whether I sell it. But heck, its in good condition considering how long its been underground.

Jeeze I think I paid 4-5 usd for mine. I don't think some one in there right mind would by that for over 200 usd. Some one can buy mine for a 100 euros. Just kidding, its not for sale.

The reason that coin is so expensive is the rarity for the busts of Livia and Julia. Hard to come by at a decent price.

Im torn here - to sell or not to sell. I've been wanting to buy a metal detector and could use any procedes to fund that, but when would I ever get another coin depecting the roman senate?!
Looks like its not going to be leaving the 'collection' at this point though. I reckon Id prefer the coin to any meagre money it would bring in.

Personally, I'd keep the coin. For now it could be a good hole filler until you get a better one.

Always keep the coin. Each one with its own story and history. You may find one better but you can never find THAT coin again, each one a custom made, one of a kind relic from Antiquity.

Your point is an excellent one. What are the odds of finding a copy of a coin from the same die pair? Pretty darn low, especially at that age.
Anyway, I like this for the sheer ridiculousness of personifying the whole senate as a young man. Plus, it could be a coin of Nero, and I had to do a lot of study of him back in the day.

I suggest you try to sell the coin. The experience would be educational. Don't be too offended if offers are below your expectations. Remember that dealers want to buy coins for which they have a customer who wants that coin in that condition. Before this post, who among us was looking for one of these?

...ah mixed messages.. I would only really consider selling it here, I'm not messing about with ebay. But Id have to wait until 250 posts to try it. Anyway, Id want quite a princely sum from it. Fund buying some more with the money. |
