@CC-Ottawa Quote: But for me, these coins are just about fun and not investment. Friends and FUN are what a hobby is all about. I aplaud the RCM for coming up with stuff like this - I really liked the Bigfoot quarter (well - the CONCEPT!) - but again, a bit steep for me to put out since it is base metal. Had it not been cartoonish, but a picture of the famous Bigfoot shot of it walking, then I probably would have gotten it I applaud the RCM for pioneering the movement to make coins more fun and more varied. The only thing I don't like about it is that I feel when too many new designs are out there, it makes what was once special not as special. I loved the change in 1967 of the rabbit nickel, wolf half, etc. But now that there are so very many different designs out there to collect, these have lost some of their special appeal. However, the other side of this is that there are a lot more cool looking things to collect! The things I have bought from the RCM tend to be like the 2011/1911 Silver dollar (missed the sets and see they are coming down on ebay , and the RP Maple Leaf with the Fab 15 privy mark (shipped to the States through a friend). I also could not resist the 2008 triangular blue half dollar with the cow on it! Who ever would have thought something like that would ever be made?

I think this is a neat, thematic coin set. Is the 2009 coin painted on a design, or is it simply just a painted coin like the other 2009 25c "special coins"?

Sounds like we're on the same page Earle42. I got the Sasquatch at issue and recently, Canada Post was selling it for 25 or 40% off (I forget which). Still expensive but I have the other two in that series so.... I also have the 2011 silver dollar and the special edition proof set for which I paid a little too much on ebay. I have two of the Milk Delivery 50 cent 'coins'. I bought one from the Mint and the other from a dealer at 60% off issue. I really like that coin but apparently, it's not really very popular. I plan to find the other triangle coin - the guitar pick - someday. The RCM really have a shotgun approach to coin themes but thankfully haven't gone as far as putting motorcycles and modern cars (save the Bricklin) on coins yet like some other mints have done. I prefer they stick with historical significance, flora and fauna with a few fun items mixed.

Quote: Is the 2009 coin painted on a design, or is it simply just a painted coin I believe that it is just painted on the coin as there doesn't appear to be a design stamped on the coin first. It is a large coin though at 35mm compared to just 23.88mm for the others in the series. The '09 was much more cartoonish than the first coins and that may have been the downfall of the series. In fact, it seems from '05 onward, the coins slide down a slope in that direction. The mintages seem to follow that same slope... 2000 - 26,106 2001 - 96,352 2002 - 49,901 2003 - 63,511 2004 - 44,752 2005 - 58,370 2006 - 30,328 2007 - 27,743 2008 - 11,538 2009 - 11,091

2003 is, by far, my favourite of the series...

The 2009 is a huge beast, not the size of a quarter, I wouldn't consider it part of the series. I'm sure you'll find at least one of those on ebay as well.

First off, it's nice to see some old postings 'wake up', especially when they are still relative. Quote:I can't seem to find these anywhere - especially at a good price.////I'm sure you'll find at least one of those on ebay as well. I'm also still looking for the 2009 version. Yes, there is ONE listed on ebay right now, but at double it's listed price, and $25 more than I'm willing to pay. I've bought all the other coins in the Canada Day set under suggested prices, and am in no hurry to pay extra for the last one. It's true that the large size of the 2009 does separate it from the others, but it's still a quarter, so it's on my want list. The 2009 Canada Day coin is one of the 28 I still need to complete my 'special' quarter set; which stands at 191 coins at this point (five added this year). I don't really care much for the majority of them, but I'm stuck with the 'gotta-get-em'-all' disease.

I always like seeing these coins when I buy collections. They give me the best hope for this hobby.
They're just a simple, uniform, collectible series that don't require a lot to acquire. It's a great way to get someone into collecting coins and isn't generally off-putting with all of the sizzle that NCLT tend to come with. In the original folders, or removed and placed into a binder, they're a nice distraction to the hobby at large. I don't make a ton of money when I sell these; but when I do sell them, I feel like I'm contributing to someone's collection. When I generally sell NCLT, it feels like its either going to be a gift for someone that may or may not appreciate it or going to someone who just wants to resell it for a couple bucks more.
IMO, this is what NCLT should be, rather than being regularly $100+ ventures.

I collect this set also, but I'm still having a hard time finding the 2009. Does anyone have a lead where I might get one at a resonable price?

jimper, the price isn't bad, but the $7 shipping already has this item OVER priced (full price to me is around $14.50). I'll still wait.
