I dont think any of us here collect for profit. That said there are a few times when a chance for either some profit, or selling sets like these can pay for the set that you want of them and why not let the hobby pay for itself when possible lol, but these chances certainly are few and far between. As for why people slab coins I would say theres a lot of reasons. Yes they become easier to resell, to authenticate, to try and get the perfect coin, to protect them, to be able to handled them ect. The list is really endless. There are some slabs where the coin was misgraded or over time has developed unsightly appearances since they arent air tight or cant protect against exposure before slabbing that wasnt able to be seen. But the vast majority of them are exactly what they say they are. Personally I like them a lot. You can handle the coins to your hearts content without worrying about marking it up and you can make sure you get what you want and they give the coins some protection while still be able to see it. Just kind of the evolution of collecting. In the past I'm sure there were well respected experts people would go to for opinions, this is basically the same thing except now that opinion is displayed for all to see and you dont have to worry about coin swap outs or just take someones word for it. Makes it easier to deal with dealers as well. I personally dont feel a dealers opinion is worth any more then anyone elses until they prove so. Anyone with the money can open a shop and call themselves a dealer. I also like my collections for each set to all look the same, so if the set contains slabbed coins I want them to all be that way. But the big reason to buy slabbed already would be its cheaper to buy it that way then to gamble youll get the grade you want sending it in. If you send in huge lots the price to slab isn't very high, but for an individual coin it can often cost close to as much as the coin does and its just not worth the gamble. Let someone else take the risk and then pay a small premium for it instead of spending 3 or 4 times that hoping to get 1 that you want. That said a lot of us that like slabs still appreciate the OGP the coins came in. Commems has an outstanding collection of old commemorative OGPs for example. If youve ever seen his threads its amazing to see all the old mint items he has and an amazing collection in itself. I also couldnt agree more that no matter which way you buy you need to know what youre buying. The biggest thing to me at least that has really cemented the big TGPs as here to stay is internet sales. You can often times find the best prices on the internet or ebay but for bigger money purchases you are taking a risk buying it raw not being able to really see it and check the weight ect. The grading helps to minimize that risk. I know in my area at least because of the cost of living I would be paying a much higher price than most people would for the same coins if I bought them from my local shop as opposed to the internet where I pay the same as everyone else

BB21, Do you actually believe people here do not collect for profit, I would venture to say there are plenty of Coin Dealers here!! Simply see the posts, BACK THEN, being made about the 2011 sets etc, all for profit, which is another story. I also do not know why, but some will NOT let that be known, others are offended by posts like this mentioning them, why? I do not express myself correctly at times, I meant when I said why slab, as in the flippers slabbing just to raise the price for the common collector, as they know the group of collectors will pay for the slab, label, etc. All the other rationale for slabs is obvious, I AM just as happy with the OGP. To each his/her own.....:) PS, I see the advertisement about the "First ever 2-coin silver Eagle Proof Set, only the second reverse proof in history" I thought the 2006 was the first ASE set with the RP, the 2011 5-coin set had a reverse Proof, also the 2012 2-coin set had the third RP ASE, to date. I thought........

I definitely think people do sell and do take times where they're looking for profit, but I don't think that's what got them started or what the majority of their decisions are based off of. And yea there's some dealers who are collectors and I think there's a difference between what they do as a business owner and what they do for this own collection. Although they do certainly have an advantage of how to get things. I don't know either why selling would be offensive. Just cus you sell something for a profit doesn't make you any less of a collector.
That's a really weird ad. The new set is indeed the first one with 2 coins but you're right there have already been two RPs and this is the 3rd. I wish the mint would just sell graded coins. Best of both worlds. But I'm usually happy with everything I've gotten right from them. I will say though the quailty of the new SF two coin set seems to be less than impressive as an overall job. Even the major sellers are realsing statements that they'll have significantly less perfect coins than they thought from the poor quailty overall

I too have seen a lower than the norm of real low, qc, It's like the qc department is permantly out to lunch for quite some time now. I too have a storage problem with my Proof/Mint sets from the early 50's, I never dreamed the sets in all OGP :), would take up all that room. I collect many things coin related, Early commem's, Anna's, Theresea's, and modern commem's too, I just never thought that after 49+ years of collecting I would be paying another mortgage for safety deposit boxes, LOL... I read the mint is replacing returned sets, IF this is true, where DO YOU think these sets will be, I hope NOT in my Oct delivery!!!!I hope the mint will listen and see the # of returned sets and goes the x-tra effort to make some crisp, new, exceptional new dies for the "2nd" phase of the 2-coin SF ASE sets........ PS, I love many things, I really Love my OGP'D Mint/Proof sets!!!! Also are the 3rd party graders labeling all of the SF coins in sets as FS, ER, ETC, at some point, there has to be minted coins from these sets that ARE NOT ER or FS, on that note, You can see my point about the " labels" and the reality of the whole picture. :)

Something happened for sure on these sets because they just arent living up to what the mint usually does. Hopefully its a 1 time thing and this doesn't become the norm. Lol I realized I was going to start having problems after 10 of the silver sets. I like them just wish I could somehow cram them all in a shoebox. I currently have a ASE bullion album, a capital plastic 19th century type set/20th century type and 1 for all the demoninations, a State Quarter album, a Presidential dollar album, a ms 67 slabbed steel penny set, a classic commem slabbed 65+ set. all modern commems proof/uncir dollar/half slabbed 70s, a slabbed 70 ASE set for proof and uncir and a slabbed 70 silver proof State Quarter set. Needless to say none are really close to completion besides the presidential album and the State Quarter album. And I did complete the slabbed war penny set. Every time I say I am just going to stick to what I have I find something new I really like and start on that. For the ER FS labels not all the new sets will have it. Some of the sets being sold now missed out on it like some of the MCM ones. Seems like a decent number will have it but the shipping has been slow so a lot are missing the date. I could care less about FS ER labels but if theyre the same price Ill get that one knowing they do infact resell for more if I decided too or was flipping some like the SF set As far as returned sets they arent supposed to recycle them, but honestly I wouldnt be shocked if they do if they end up sending all the late orders as replacements. I have a feeling Ill be returning some when my non slabbed ones arrive.

Fantastic thread. I'm with BB21 in that I prefer slabs. I like handling them better: viewing is a snap versus all the commotion to unfold the OGP. The 70s should perform, and the others won't be questioned as easily for counterfeit. It's one further QC step from buying direct from the mint (although sad to agree that step seems to be getting smaller) toward getting a nice piece in hand without having to buy and return multiples. Plus, at some point you can figure the ones in OGP have been pretty picked over. Case in point: buying a proof set sight-unseen and online. You don't expect that one to be superlative, right?

I actually have bought more than a few from internet venues, I have more than I ever thought I would and hope to keep going back to the first years for the Proof sets and the Mint sets. I too have been detoured more times then I care to recall, I have more albums, (slabs),I had to get the coins, and there they were, LOL. OGP, and most in between, I never thought I would loose part of my eye-sight roll searching for years under a stereo microscope, Now I am more into using the scope for research of silver dollars, etal........

Sorry to hear about the eye sight. Thats exactly what happened to though, would be browsing and see something I had to have then of course would have to work to complete the set. I really need to disable my computer from looking through ebay coin listings lol

The auction houses are like most of us, very addictingly addicted!!!:) I see the S proof in the C&C sets are going to be an S mint marked Silver dollar for sure, I too am preturbed the mint did NOT let that information out before the 2-coin San Fran set was issued, very slick move!!:( Now the star is for sure the RP...

Yeah, the Mint snuck the "S" Proof into the C&C Set, but the good news is the C&C Set is limited to 100,000 max. It could have been worse. I was afraid they'd sell 2012-S individual Proofs alongside the 2012-W Proofs, with no mintage limits.

Personally I think the RP is always the star of these sets whether or not the S would have only been in the set but I hate how underhanded they were about it
DNA theres still plenty of time left in the year for that. Although the quality has been so bad theyll burn through all their extras on replacements

I had to order that C&C set, I am just glad there are limits and it does look, as of now, that the RP will take the low mintage for the set, UNLESS BB21 is correct and for all we know the RP'S will be offered in another set, I could see it now, The One and only 3rd RP from the SF Mint and the 2012 new West Point Minted 4th RP of the great year 2012!!!!! ONLY KIDDING!!

It does seem underhanded to include the S proof in the C&C set. It makes me think that you can't trust the mint for anything anymore. I am disappointed. And I didn't even get my San Francisco sets yet!
