I am looking to buy some old french or English gold coins...just for the pleasure...love the look of those coins. Yes China will have a massive market but I don't know anything about there coins...not even a little bit.

Something like 480 known 1921 5c. That's somewhat scarce, and yet it commands a massive premium. Probably piggy-backing on the 50c. I'm guessing people jealously hold onto those 1921 5c. They should be seen more often.
This topic has two approaches:
(1) Valuable things today which are good investments for the future
1921 5c 1966 $1 small beads 2000p dime
(2) Bargains today which could skyrocket in the future:
1932 5c far 2 in high grade 1929 high 9 in very high grade 1946c Newfoundland 5c 1965 specimen set
That last one probably suffers from the fact that few people know they even exist. And, I believe, they were packaged like PL sets.

when you say the 1929 high 9 do you mean the 1 cent piece?

Yes, the small cent. I think I've read it is difficult to get in high grade. But, a lot of them may be sitting in ICCS flips unattributed.

When I invest I buy any silver coins near spot price. For my passion I buy Victorian coins just for the fun of looking at them. I want to use them for telling stories.

I agree with DBM. I think there will always be a few people at the top of the food chain who want the very best.
I would add problem free key dates with eye appeal to the list.

Investment? Gold, silver and platinum at today's prices.
Collectible coins are only a good investment if you find unattributed examples. If you buy them already recognized, you will not make a lot of profit - hardly any profit at all if you factor inflation and compare with other types of investments.
Buy what you like. It is better than buying a concert ticket - you get the same amusement, but with the coin you still get some money back.

Before editing, you asked if the 1921 50c was a good investment.
Nope. It is not
Investment means making money, right?
Take 350,000 and buy a house on a good neighborhood and sell it in 5y - that is an investment - you will make AT LEAST 15%. Now take the same 350K and buy a 50c 1921 - how much it will sell for in 5y? Around 350K
... now if you FIND a 1921 unattributed on a garage sale, buy it for 10 bucks, certify it (more $20 or so - PCGS) THEN you made a good investment.
This is one of the many reasons people read, research, study, discuss, attend shows and club meetings - to educate themselves (and have fun in the process) to be capable of finding things unattributed.
