For what it's worth, I doubt it's the actual mailman, i.e., the person who delivers your mail, is the thief. Because they have to deal with the public on a daily basis they tend to be a lot more accountable. Anything that gets stolen is most likely an 'inside job' at one of the big sorting plants like Gateway in Mississauga where a lot of mail gets 'lost' - and the militant employees there are rarely held accountable for anything. Anything traveling cross-border has to go through several of these plants on both sides.

artdio...You've just made me hug my coins an awful lot closer. What a sad story...  Now I'm afraid to mail.. anything to PCGS.... The mail or delivery folks must recognize key addresses and then the "bad guys" could act accordingly..... BTW...Is that "56,000" in dollars? |

DEVLEC - do not mail anything to PCGS. Use Fed-Ex...

Everyone must go to the Canadian Post Office site and look at the articles that are not covered by insurance whether bought or not. We would never use the mail again.

A few months ago I had an envelope come in extremely late (six weeks to deliver from AB to ON). It was ripped open and the contents (two silver quarters) were gone. It came in one of those "sorry we wrecked your mail but crap happens" bags. I believe someone at the sorting plant stole them. I didn't do anything about it cause they weren't really worth anything (lowball junk silver win), but it still makes me mad that people in the sorting plants can do all sorts of things with impunity.

Funny you should mention about 2 quarters gone missing as that happened to me last year.It was a seller in Ontario and the quarters were only a few bucks so I did not report it to Canada post.The mail man passed it to me as I was outside and I said thanks for nothing.

On the other hand, when I was selling on ebay a year or so back I had an item not received case from a guy in Denver for a silver proof toonie. Reimbursed him and wrote it off. But a couple of months later I got one of those sorry bags from the Denver Post Office. In it was the corner of the the envelope with the return address and the little cardboard and bubble wrap packet with the toonie in it. Personally I think that most of these cases are the machinery ripping the packet open. After it's been scattered or if more than one packet was involved then it's kind of hard for them to put it back together and get the right contents back together with the right address. Not saying there aren't cases of theft. Just saying it's not the only explanation. Also, I would recommend always filing a report when this sort of things happen. Yes, it's unlikely to help your specific case but the pattern of reports can help Canada Post to justify an investigation and narrow down where it should focus so if it turns out there is a thief involved it makes it more likely they will get caught eventually. And no, I have no connection with Canada Post or any other shipping company :-) |

I truly think Customs has a lot to do with it. I rarely ever have issues sending within Canada, and I often mail from Michigan to other states with no issue. As soon as it's going from one country to another, the problems increase tenfold.

A bit off topic but just a heads up to everyone...when you register something to another country from Canada you are not purchasing a guarantee of security you are buying proof that it was mailed. that's it. If your mailing coins use something else.

I just want to say that I have bought (not sold) a few items off the net... I once had two krugerands, 1000 walking liberties as well as 2 8toz silver coins shipped to me.. with a customs slip declaring the total value.. through USPS and then through can post..
Not an issue at all.. only big problem was paying the customs upon delivery which I was happy to do... you get it back for all bullion.
I suppose if you use the mail system enough you're going to run into a bump in the road.. and from the stories I have read some have been horrific..
I just wanted to say I still have faith in the postal system as a whole. But when I ship, send or "gift" my coins... I make sure there is very little way others know there's really anything of any great value in the package.. that gives me peace of mind.
