Nice coin and well struck for an O mint. My guess is they went AU-55 on this one.

AU, with slight wear at the top of Liberty's head, friction in the fields, and quite a bit of remaining luster around the periphery. The center of the reverse is sharply-defined which is not always the case for Type 1 gold dollars, especially branch mint issues. The bad news is that there are perhaps enough diagonal hairline scratches to warrant a "cleaned" notation on a TPG holder. If it is priced higher than Trends I would suspect it is over-priced. |

I think NGC gave it AU58.

I think I would personally grade it AU-55 but given this is from New Orleans, I think they bumped it up to AU-58.

as long as it wasn't stuck with a "cleaned/details" label, I would guess AU-55. And is that a small die crack on the obverse about 5-o'clock.  |

I agree that it has a strong reverse lettering, in comparison to others of the series. I just can't pull the trigger on $135 over trends (asking $485, trends 350) for this piece. oih82w8: I have a chance to check your theory out.
I have a silver 1904 2 1/2 centimos Panama 'Pill', which is around the same size but a bit thicker than a gold dollar. 900 fine silver would be a little harder than gold.
I just have to find the little blighter in the 4,500 odd World coins in my collection.
Guess that you are going to have to wait for a short time!

Found it! The rim denticles are a little sharper than the gold dollar, so I can't quite make up my mind (so far) about the theory. The jury is still out.

UPDATE: I got it! The seller went from a "Buy It Now" to auction and I did the old " bid and forget it" (for the most part, I was on the road when it closed).  Edited by oih82w8
