Whenever I take a trip, I dump anything of possible high-value resale at my SDB

Do some larger banks have SDB's big enough to handle this amount of items? I know the ones I have seen around here are rather small. I have one of the biggest ones I could find around here and it still wouldn't hold 1/4 of that amount of coins unless maybe they were all just dumped in there, no holders or anything (and even then I am pretty sure it wouldn't hold all of them). I have to rearrange everything in mine with just the small amount of coins I have in there every time I add something to it and I am always thinking there is no way this is going to fit each time

Why not have an in-home large safe bolted to the floor? Not likely your garden variety thief would know to bring a bulldozer to rip that out. :) Also most thieves not likely prepared for opening a gun safe. Most thieves want to go in and take stuff and get out ASAP.

Not sure why they didn't take everything though- possibly got scared off by a noise in neighborhood.

I just find it hard to believe someone had this much bullion just lying around in their home and not in some sort of safe. If you can afford this much bullion you can afford a safe and security system to protect it. It just seems wrong.

Personally I'm unsure--because I'm nowhere monied enough to need a SDB larger than my bank offers. Not trying to start a flame war--but just thinking how I would do things if I owned that much bullion--absolute secrecy may not give me enough piece of mind, unless I had a steel+concrete panic room/vault with some killer security system.

When I read a story like this, I think a person would be better off burying everything under their dog box.

I agree. Even then, I would still be uncomfortable.

When I go on vacation, any valuables that won't fit in my SDB, goes to my parents house.
My dad has a nice safe and, there always home.

I am guessing an option would be to rent one of those climate controlled storage units. They usually have security cameras set up and they are always inside instead of the type you pull up, throw open the door, grab and go places. Some people do not live near family so taking them elsewhere is not an option for them either. I saw one of these climate controlled unit places today and this thread came to mind for a hoard so large that wouldn't fit in any SDB I know of. There are some down falls with this option also but may be a little better security than leaving it all at home when you are traveling

One monster box of United States Gold Eagles.

Pure madness!

A monster box of gold eagles (500 coins) is worth well over $800,000 in melt value alone
