Thanks cointosser, you've got me going through my current sixpence lot from my junkbox

Safe to say this isn't rare, first four I checked I had 2 of each type.

Hmm ok, not so rare then, what about the space between I and X on the other coin, is that something considered more rare or not?

I've just received The Identification of British 20th Century Bronze Coin Varieties and The Identification of British 20th Century Silver Coin Varieties from my niece as a belated Xmas present.

The silver book is pretty impressive - detailed explanation of major varieties with photos, notes on minor varieties however there's not much on the rarity of different varieties. Mr Groom says that's because few dealers list these coins except for the very major varieties.

There's a huge amount of varieties for the decimal coinage - far more than I expected.

The first 2 1953 UK crowns I looked at are Obv 1, but I have some more somewhere and I'll check those.

Cointosser77, the coin pictured is in great need of a bath in 100% acetone to remove all the green PVC gunk on it.

So it's getting it from the plastic?

I don't think we have acetone here... will olive oil work too?

Cointosser77,
It's easy to get acetone from the chemist in the UK - it's used as a household solvent.

Nail varnish remover is also acetone but might have harmful (to coins) substances mixed with it.

I've just examined 7 1955 sixpences.

3 have "I" of SIX pointing slightly to the right of a tooth, 4 have "I" of SIX pointing to a space.

In the case of this coin, yes. Long term storage in PVC type pages will usually end up with the coins being affected in this manner.

Pure Acetone would normally be purchased at a large Hardware chain, Bunnings, Masters, Mitre10. Not sure if any of those exist in the UK, but try the stores where you normally buy paint and paint thinners etc.

Here in Australia it comes in a 1 Litre bottle and costs around AU$10.

Nail polish remover is not pure and contains harmful oils etc, not recommended for use on coins.
