NoviceCoJ: First of all, to the CCF!
I would steer clear of that so called 'acquaintance' of yours!

I he / she really knows it's value, they are being dishonest, and when you find out, your 'acquaintanceship' will be under threat.

If that coin is genuine, which I have little reason to doubt, Fuzzy317's estimate of value is correct.

Where did you find it? Those things are very valuable, and perhaps the owner may be looking for it.

I just purchased a 1911 St. Gaudens Double Eagle and I paid just over 1500 dollars. What a nice guy to offer you a whopping 100 dollars. AU examples on ebay bring around 1700 dollars. It should weigh about 33.4 grams.

Holy cow!!

Now you guys have made me nervous about holding the coin! I will get pictures and weigh the thing ASAP when I get home from work.

Um....holy cow.

I don't blame you, but we have a bad word filter for a reason.

also try get measurements of the width. And just for fun, carefully see if it sticks to a magnet.

Fingers crossed for you, hope it's the real deal! Beautiful coin, the Saint Gaudens. Looking forward to pictures, weight, and measurement.

My bad. I thought I had purchased a 1911 but it was a 1910. Close enough .

Good! I would be very tender when touching this coin and only when wearing cotton gloves. This is, potentially, a very valuable coin for you. Gold is pretty soft and is susceptible to scratches.

Can you tell us where you "found" it?

I'm betting this is an Internet troll just messing with the members.
Popping popcorn and pulling up the lawn chair to see how this plays out.

Hi again!

Sorry this has taken me a couple of days to do but finally got around to taking those pictures. The size? I measured it and figure its about 4cm? or 4 something going right down the middle. This is so lax of me but I couldn't find a ruler so I measured it with Tailors tape (You know the one? For measuring your waist etc for clothes) and I can't find my kitchen scale yet so weight shall come soon!

The coin is in a necklace. My Grandmother passed in January and left me a box of random things that I hadn't gone through till recently. So was REALLY surprised when I found this and I'm pretty sure my relatives don't know she gave it to me otherwise my Aunt would've been the first to take it LOL. (She's a bit of a greedy one)

Whether this is real or not, I have decided to keep it regardless. It's a cute memento from her that I will try to hunt down a picture of her wearing or maybe find out the back story to it? I don't know.

Anyway here are the pictures! Sorry they're bad but I didn't know if there were certain angles or whatever in taking pictures of coins.

Took me awhile to resize the pictures but ended up just using Paint and took right away. I even signed it so you know I didn't just take these pictures of some random google search lol.

The true diameter should be 34mm, but given the accuracy of your measuring tool () and the difficulty of deciding exactly where the rim is in the bezel, I don't see that as a problem.

This is a 1911-D (mint mark above the date). Not the most common issue, but not the least. I really don't see anything about the coin that alarms me as a fake, and given its' provenance I wouldn't have much trouble believing it's real. However, having been in jewelery - likely polished, as well - it's probably only worth the value of the gold.

Looks good to me. Check the bezel (that ropey thing holding the coin) for being 14 karat or maybe 18 karet if it is old.

Your grandmother gave you the box, so she wanted you to have it. I have a graby realative too so I know what you mean by the aunt.
