I want all the reverses but this is much harder than the obverse.
And I'm not bothered by condition - I will be later in life, but I am but a poor youth. Besides, the history contained by a Crispina sestertius which is worn smooth is fuller than the untouched mint state crispina.
My Vetranio (well, sort of vetranio, it was issued by him) and my julian II are both from Chris' cull pile and I am not bothered by that at all. In a way, its better - they passed through the hands of the romans and they have passed through the hands of the modern man. Extra provenance.
As far as I'm concerned, as long as the coin is identifiable as to the obverse, the coin is worth keeping. If its a rare reverse with a smooth obverse, its worth keeping. As the collection progresses, the low grade cruddy examples will be replaced and upgraded as better examples filter through. But I will never dispose of a roman coin which can be, even in part, identified.

My goal is to obtain coins that are 100% attributable to a catalog ID, low grade is fine with me as I have lots of those. I know those that won't settle for a coin that is nothing but the best and top grade. If I done that, I probably wouldn't be collecting or getting near as many coins.
@Ben. You're doing a good job as a beginner and filling those slots with coins you find in uncleaned lots. I've been doing it differently by looking for single coins from dealers. Although, later on if you really want to fill in some of those slots you may have to do it that way by purchasing single coins.
The first 50 Roman Imperial rulers are fairly easy to come by for any budget. It took me a year to get that many. And now, I'm in the 60-70 range, still several affordable coins to grab. I think it's going to start really getting tough for me once I pass 70. 90-100 is going to be really difficult.
My plans are once I can't go too much farther is when I'm going to kind of relax for awhile and collect various reverse types and upgrade some of those rulers.

Every collector is different as is every collection. I remember being 'young' once and a fellow collector (older than myself) proudly showed me his latest aquisition. He collected Roman Provincial types and I was horrified by what he had paid for an AE from somewhere in Asia Minor. Before the internet supplies were limited and you could pay through the nose for a hard to find city. I could not for the life of me understand why he would pay over $100 for something that I thought looked like it had been found in the road....... after 1000 years ! But it seemed to work for him so I gave him the obligatory 'very nice'. Starting a collection means almost everything is new and interesting. The last thing we care about really is can I do better ? You can do better 99% of the time but who wants to wait all the years it takes to find the 'best' deal on the planet. As long as you don't bankrupt yourself and become so involved with your collection that you bore the heck out of every person (esp females) you ever meet....... it is a very fun thing to do when the alternatives are limited.

Haha, yeah. I hardly never talk to people and females about my collection. One reason is for security reasons because I don't want my collection to get stolen. Better that they don't know about it is good theft protection. Excellent thing about being online is that I can talk about it here instead.
Most people are not coin collectors and are not interested in it. In fact, most people don't collect anything. That I know of, anyways.

Hi Guys. Just wanted to add my bit to this thread. I have literally thousands of what I have to call unresearched Roman coins that I am pretty sure will contain some of the stuff you are after. Problem is that I am a little shaky (to say the least) on the identification of most of them, even though I collect as well as dig them up. I know I should educate myself a little more but my pleasure comes in the finding of these and not so much the value so all I do is put them on ebay. Some make 2 or 3 pounds and others, obviously the better ones make more, sometimes a lot more. Has anyone got any ideas on how I can both help you guys collect what you need while at the same time better educate myself?

Sorry, but you ain't allowed to offer to sell coins right now. Letting you know before you get banned because they will. It's for your and everyone else's protection. But anyways..
Any coins that you want help with IDing, you can post an image of it here and it's possible someone may have the answer for you. That's great that you find them yourself. I wish I could do that.

Thanks for that Gil-galad, but I was thinking more along the lines of giving them as gifts. I sell on ebay and no where else, it just seems a shame that a lot of the collectors here are missing items that I probably have. My intention was not to offer anything for sale here and to be fair to myself I don't think my post looks that way, but anyway if I do have anything that looks a little different I will whizz a picture on here before I stick it on ebay. Cheers.

Ooh - I like the first one. I need Diocletian and Maximian for my Britannic Empire collection (Carausius, allectus, Dioclet, Maxim, Constantius I).
However, without paypal I'm going to have to be creative in acquiring lots and that ones probably going to go quite high.

Did all the links open? ebay is starting to irritate me... they seem to be making it a little harder each day for you to browse a foreign ebay site... Maybe it's not deliberate, but still... : P
