I have this set also, I just bought it off ebay, are you saying the coins are in harms way? I saw Steven Bromberg have graded large busts for sale on the shopping channel 2 weeks a go there were ms 65 and ms 66 coins and 1 other certified grade, I don't remember the price . I think he is from Candian coin and currency. Someome will correct me if I'm wrong,

For sure the double dollar sets from 1972 and 1973 contain PVC. If the coins are left in the set they will be seriously harmed. I am not sure when the PVC was eliminated....it may be post-1973. I would have to check. There is a string on this site somewhere where I posted some pictures of my 1973 set. All of the coins were destroyed. I still have the dollar in my scrap somewhere. I will try to find it.

I definitely agree, as high price and the less popular giftware items sell out in most cases. However, the payment plan is great on items that are at issue price. This is how I was able to afford this years proof set , otherwise I wouldn't be able. I nearly was taken in by a sales pitch for$288 worth of giftware, that if sold on ebay might of fetched $100. He had hyped it as $125 discount , a show stopper. I was brand new to collecting, and hadn't discovered ebay yet. My son got me on ebay and when I compared the items, I discovered my error in time, and was able to return the items for a full refund. It truly is buyer beware. However, I have used it to my advantage to buy items sold out at RCM and at issue price and on payments through the shopping channel. It really comes down to doing your research before hand, so you can spot value.

Thanks for the heads-up on the PVC danger with this set.
You did say that the "red material" is where the problem is and not in the clear plastic window. I'll take each out and now place them in hard flips for now. Maybe that touch of plastic that I placed under the cent protected it too.
I will check and let you all know.,..in a bit.......
The Reverse of the 25c seems to be unaffected so far...(maybe I got lucky),....It's showing nicely here...
Could this one be a later case without PVC in the red..?
The 25c piece has always been Obverse up and this is the first time that I've tuned it over to take these pics.

Nice coin... I would get it certified ... seems a close PL-66 which will get you close to $400.
Good luck !!

Agreed with getting that coin out of there. Bathe it in acetone to try to get rid of the PVC.

Here is my 1973 dollar. I would grade is SP-Ugly! Beware the PVC in these sets! And PS, the coin still looks this way after copious acetone bathing. The rest of the set was spending money.....

My 73's are now out of that OE PVC case. The best of them seems to be the 25 LB coin. My silver dollar also has some light staining on the Obverse. Haven't placed them in acetone yet. Definite fine die polishing on both sides. More showing on the right side of the Obverse and then below the horse to ground on the Reverse.

SPP-Ottawa...Takes me awhile to read things and digest it.
You say SP.. and not PL.
Could you help me here as to why..? I do see a wire rim around the 25 cent piece,..and there is a Cameo... is that a few clues..and how does such a set mix up take place with these coins..?
Thanks again...

First clue: It's in the specimen set packaging.
PL came in sealed plastic film.

You can tell, by looking at the coin itself, but you posted a picture of the Prestige Double Dollar Set - all coins in those sets were specimen strikes - that made it easy...

Thanks so much.......It's been eons since I've looked into these and would not have realized that they were SP instead of PL.
Could have been costly to me ...in the future.
