Are the edges reeded? If not it may have been put through some sort of punch press but then it would not be thinner. A quarter is slightly thinner than a SBA. A SBA is slightly thinner then a 1970's half but the late 1990's to current halves seem to be the same thickness as a SBA. If it was struck on a SBA planchet you at least have the 1980 date going for you in your favor as both were struck during the same year. |

Errorcoins222 - yes - found in a roll. My dad saw picks and he was wondering quarter planchette. He saw the pics I took with my iPhone only. These are better. So I weigh it - am I looking for SBA weight? How do I get someone that knows about it to look at ? Is this worth getting certified if legit? I really know little about errors Thanks |

The edge is partially reeded. I looked yesterday to see on my own in case someone ground it down.
If center of Kennedy's head was 12 o clock, it's reeded from 10:30 to about 2:30.
It's roughly 2/3 thickness of 1976 half.
Noticeably lighter.

I am far from an expert on things like this, but my first impression was also a coin struck on a wrong planchet. Keep us posted as to what you find out about it. Hoping this works out to be a good find  If you have a trusted, local coin shop, see what they say. |

I really don't see anything that would suggest that it is fake. The metal flow is just right for what one would expect for a Kennedy on an SBA planchet. A weight usually settles any doubt. And imo, this is a good coin to send in to a TPG. Most error collectors will know it is genuine, though, so it may not be needed if you can get a buyer to pay what you want. Its all up to you, really. Search heritage auctions for a value. this is a much cooler find than a bunch of silver IMO.  |

I would definitely send it to PCGS or NGC and have it graded if you're looking to sell. A major find indeed. Congrat!

Looks legit and the weight checks out. Take it from someone who also had a transitional error; Get it Certified. Anyone who would want to buy it will want it certified. Great find!

I took mine to a large reputible dealer, and they sent it in. Cost will be between $80 - $100. Just make sure to get documentation that they are sending it in to protect yourself.
