Sorry, but I don't think it will make mint state. Luster is pretty bright in the protected areas between stars and letters but noticeably darker in the fields; this is almost certainly due to friction. There is very little wear on the devices so it should be good for a high AU, probably 55 but maybe 58.

It's a nice type coin regardless. Hopefully I'm wrong and you will get the MS grade you are hoping for.

Can't see any wear. A few small dings don't help.

It might be the lighting, but that coin might come back a 50/53. Those fields look like they've seen a bunch of circulation.

MS-63 seems fair on this one, little baggy but I don't see any wear.

My guess is AU53. With a break you could get an AU55. I don't see an MS coin but sometimes pictures are deceiving.

NGC just updated my online invoice with the grades for the coins I submitted.

This is coming back to me at MS 62!

You're saying the 1886S in this thread is Mint State? The picture shows a coin with wear over the entire device (both sides) and well into the fields. Either it's a poor photograph or you got a gift from the grader. The luster looks like it's only around the rims. Now if the luster is throughout, then you just need better photos.

Though I dont have the coin in hand (its still at NGC at the moment) I do remember it being somewhat more lustrous than this photo suggests, but it also appeared to me that there were many more contact marks than the photo suggests as well.

Congratulations on the result. Your comment about the coin having more luster and more contact marks point to the MS grade.

Way to go - and once again I nailed it on gold, which I seem to do almost every time on CCF - Now in real life I haven't been so luck, usually 2-3 grade points lower from a TPG than what I think. That is why I don't play in gold.

I also sent out a 1906 D $5 with this same lot, so when I get that coin back in hand so I can take pictures i'll make a guess the grade for that one as well.
