@turboZack: 1958 is one of the years known for mint sets toning coins deeply and brightly. There was something particular in the packaging for that year (and some of the other years around then) that reacted with silver and led to fantastically and wildly toned coins. My 1958-D Franklin half dollar also exhibits some "wow" factor mint-set toning (see below).

I don't know all of the chemistry of what causes it, but I do know I like it!

@ brg5658: Thank you very much! I'll have to look for that date on coins and see if the same effect is given. I really appreciate your picture of that beautiful coin!

The chemistry that causes dull grey patination is the same as what produces the beautiful colours seen here.

What IS different is the thickness of the patination.

There a a phsical analogy with oil on water.
If the layer of oil is only molecules thick, a colour interference in the reflected light on the surface happens.

I suspect that the same sort of thing is happening with the very thin oxide and sulphide layers on metal surface.

I found a penny that had been sitting in the sun for a long time, it had this same sort of thing going on. Here's a picture of what it looks like:

I have always loved Blue Toned coins, so the same night I seen this thread I started looking for a coin that had blue toning.

This is the one I bought.

(Sellers pictures, sorry for the small images)
